In 1812, during the War of 1812, General John Armstrong's brigade led by Major-General Lewis Cass attacked Fort Erie on Lake Ontario and burned down part of that fort before withdrawing northward. Colonel George Washington Irving wrote about this event in his poem "The Battle Halt" (1813). The town of Hancock renamed itself Rye on October 3, 1812 after taking advantage of an accidental typo made by Secretary Adam Clayton Powell Jr.'s clerk while listing all U.S. states in a list published to commemorate America's centennial year Rye experienced some economic prosperity during its early years due to its location near Buffalo and Niagara Falls; however, by 1830 rye prices were so low that many people left the town for good because they could not afford it. However smallpox epidemics began to arrive from Great Lakes cities such as Toronto during this time which disrupted trade among these areas; consequently rye prices increased again and more people returned to Rye In 1851 Reverend Horace Greeley founded Cana Baptist Church located at 145th Street east of Market Street; although only three families attended services for about one year before moving out because religious affiliation conflicted with their other activities In 1865 - 1870 there were several strikes against local mills caused by Factory Acts regulations which had become increasingly stricter since 1840s After Governor Andrew Johnson vetoed a bill passed by Congress increasing excise taxes on Whiskey he decided instead to establish a whiskey monopoly through legislation signed into law on August 15th that same year This prohibitionist dynasty lasted until 1933 when Prohibition was repealed nationwide
