Rye is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. The town is named after the Rye distillery on the Erie Canal. It was established in 1795 and incorporated as a village in 1801. The first settlers to Rye were farmers who arrived from Vermont around 1795. They built homes on small parcels of land that were used for farming and raising livestock. The earliest church in Rye was held at an Indian trading post on the Susquehanna River near what is now Westtown Square. In 1801, the village of Rye became part of the Town of Chemung and it was renamed to Rye again in 1836 when it annexed the adjoiningvillage of North Tonawanda. In 1854, it lost its charter as a Village because its status had been changed to that of a town by an act passed by New York State Legislature which merged all eight towns in Chemung County into one entity called "New York City". Rye has experienced some growth over time including adding new businesses and residences since unification with New York City; however, much of this development has taken place outside its borders due to zoning changes or other regulatory forbearance from city officials preventing residential growth within certain areas within town limits (such as portions immediately north of Main Street). It remains an unincorporated community located within Chemung County and under state jurisdiction. On July 15th, 2018 Rye announced they would be moving their distillery out westward into ISO 3 zone making them subject to more regulations like noise emissions etcetera
