Rye is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,830 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the ancient town of Rye on the Long Island Sound. A post office called Rye was established in 1785 and remained in operation until 1959. The first Europeans to find and explore the area that includes present-day Rye were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of four ships sailed up what is now Main Street on November 12, 1524, when they sighted "a long cape" off the coast of what is now Sayville; this was their first landfall in North America. They named it Islip after one of their ship's cannons which had malfunctioned during their voyage and landed them on Long Island Sound instead of Manhattan as planned. In 1814, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a letter to James Kappes (a local citizen) proposing that an Academy be established for boys in Islip; Kappes accepted and founded what would become Yeshiva University there in 1825. In 1836, Ezra Cornell took over management of Yeshiva University from Kappes and built a new campus on West Sayville Road across from downtown Rye. It would be known as Cornell University until it merged with Columbia University in 1945 to form Ivy League Universities Corporation (Ivy League). After much debate among trustees over whether or not to make rye the capital city of New York State (the vote did not take place), Albany was chosen as the capital city by statehood statutes on December 14th, 1898; however, because Pottersville lay east of Albany proper and because there were no hills within convenient distance for hosting such an important governmental center, rye continued to serve as its rural neighbor's main cultural center well into the 21st century despite becoming only slightly more populous than Watertown through2010 Census figures alone! During World War II many small businesses were destroyed during bombings raids by Allied forces that targeted German civilians living near strategic coastal towns like Ithaca (now Ithaca-Syracuse), Schenectady (now Schenectady-Troy), Auburn Hills (now Detroit Heights), Farmingdale (now Garden City), White Plains Junction (now White Plains), Amherst Junction (now Amherst Junction Airport) and other locations around New York City including East Harlem/New York Yankees baseball stadium - all without any loss or damage inflicted upon any property whatsoever!
