Rockville Centre, New York is a town in Nassau County, New York, on the southern shore of Long Island. The population was 56,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Highlandtown-Westbury boroughs. The area now known as Rockville Centre was first settled by Europeans in 1624 and was named for Arthur Rochelle, 1st Viscount Rockingham. The Rochelles were Scottish immigrants who built a ferry landing there in 1661 to provide transportation between Great Britain and their farmlands on Long Island Sound. In 1757–58 during the French and Indian War (1756-1763), General George Washington's forces burned down the village of Southampton on the southern tip of Long Island after its inhabitants had sheltered with British troops under cover of night. The villagers rebuilt their homes near present day Route 8 Road and placed an eagle on top of a large rock to herald their new town name: "Rochester". The growth of Rochester slowed around 1800 as more English families moved into the area to escape Revolutionary conflict in England. But by 1820, when Rochester's population reached 507 people, it again began to grow rapidly due to waves of Irish immigrants coming overland from Ireland beginning in 1813. During this time, many brickmakers lived and worked close to where they made bricks because there were no other places available to process lime until 1828 when Niagara Falls became available for extracting limestone from beneath the earth. By 1850, all but 12 residents had left Rochester for jobs in Buffalo or Erie County; only two families remained until 1890 when manufacturing operations ended here also due to advances in transportation such as Railroad Agreements that opened up new markets for products made in America including automobiles and planes. A post office called Rochester was established at 6 Whitehall Street on January 15th, 1825; it changed its name to Rockville Centre October 1st 1830 after Major General James O'Connell ROCKVILLE CENTER CHURCH which he donated land for on May 25th 1830
The town of Rockville Centre, New York was founded in 1795 by John Jacob Astor. It became a city in 1881 and was named after the village of Rochelle, France. In 1938, it was merged with the neighboring village of Westchester to form the new city of New York City.
