Rockville Centre is a city in New York State. It is the seat of Rockville Centre County and has a population of over 122,000. The metropolitan area includes all of Rockville Centre, as well as neighboring towns and villages, with a population of over 2 million. The largest employer in Rockville Centre is the Near North Side Community School District which employs nearly 11,000 people. Rockville Centre was founded by German immigrants on October 4, 1795 as West Point Road (later known as George Washington Boulevard). In 1874 it became part of the town of Yonkers and then annexation into the City of New York in 1898. In 1962 it merged with other nearby municipalities to form the present-day City of Rockville Center. The downtown area around Union Station was designed by architect James Drain for builder J P Morgan & Co., who had plans to build an express station on this site that would have been among the largest in America at that time. Construction began in 1911 but stopped due to World War I and resumed only after Morgan's death in 1920; ultimately it was not completed because OFarrell bought Morgan's land and built his own express station on it instead. During Prohibition, profits from bootlegging ran high enough for organized crimeboss Al Capone to buy controlling interest in Armoury Wine & Spirits Company, one of the most prosperous small businesses in America at that time. This company later became Capone's NLN Enterprises Limited Partnership which employed more than 12,000 people across its various operations throughout New York State and Canada during Prohibition; these included manufacturing munitions for American military forces stationed abroad under Ulysses S Grant's command; exporting liquor through dummy companies located throughout pre-war Europe; owning or operating twenty-six hotels across nine states during prohibition; and providing security for many famous rumrunners such as Lucky Luciano (the " heel"of organized crime) and Sam Giancana (the " boss"). Rockville Centre is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 23,569 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. Rockville Centre is bordered by the towns of Yonkers to the north and South Nyack to the east and west; Valhalla to the south; and Escondido, California to the southwest. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rockville Centre were French Jesuit missionaries in 1764 who named it take-a-way from Montresor because they found an abundant supply of water hereabouts. George Washington's Headquarters were located here until 1795 when it moved to Mount Vernon. One hundred years later, on November 3rd, 1814 Major General James Knyphausen (1763-1821) surrendered at Saratoga Springs after a threemonth battle with 400 British troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Sullivan (1757-1825). In 1815 Congress designated Rockville Centre as part of newly created Tarrytown Township although its population never reached 1,000 settlers until 1840 when it did so with assistance from entrepreneur Israel Putnam Sr. In 1836 Congressman Isaac Nolin (D-Nyc.) approved plans for a new city government that would extend into western Westchester County where there had been no developed area for over twenty years due largely to landowner resistance and fears that such growth would swamp existing villages and towns within their boundaries. Over time other areas in eastern Westchester County also became desirable for city development including White Plains which began gaining population rapidly in the 1870s; Scarsdale which achieved notoriety as home of Peking University during World War II; Lockport which became an important port on Long Island Sound; Hastings Center which became known for its high school programs before becoming a center for healthcare services through Apple Inc.; Brookfield Village which replaced Northbrook Village as the community's primary shopping center after Jack Welch's purchase of Sears & Roebuck in 1957; Finally we reach today’s incarnation – downtown – founded in 1886 by Judge Augustus Kelley – one of America’s earliest civic leaders Only two weeks later on October 5th streetcars started running between this new downtown area and Saratoga Springs with service terminating at simply Union Station where passengers boarded wagons called "the coaches". This rapid expansion led architect Stanford White to comment “It was not easy [to build] these streets...They are too wide…I am sorry but I must confess that I do not think our architects could have done much else except improve upon old roads” Governor Nelson Aldrich requested federal funding for further development making possible design changes such as widened sidewalks across all blocks preventing vehicles from parking on front yards or side streets causing problems for neighbours who hadToiled endlessly landscaping their properties since pioneer times while tax payers footed THE bill FOR THIS NEW CITIES EXPANSION!
