In 1626, two Englishmen named John Smith and James Watt discovered gold near what is now Rockville Centre when they explored Long Island for Spain. Spain claimed land around the bay so Englishman George Washington bought it from Spain for £10 in 1785 as part of his Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution. In 1871, Congress passed an act authorizing Brooklyn Township to annex lands east of Gowanus Canal as part of a larger plan called "Manhattan Project". The town annexed some areas including present-day North White Plains and Fresh Meadows while leaving others such as Jericho Hill unannexed. In 1898, with section 7 remaining unincorporated within Brooklyn Township proper, local residents formed their own municipality known as "Rockville Centre" to reflect their incorporation intoBrooklyn Township through that act. The name originated with a racetrack located just outside the boundaries of today's ROC headquarters campus; racecourses were often used by landowners as marketing tools to attract settlers around their rural communities during this time period In 1949, Allstate Insurance Company made its move from Hartford Connecticut into early Rockville Center territory when it leased 500 acres (2 km²) on Park Avenue for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $25 million today). In 1957 Allstate merged with Travelers insurance company forming American General Corporation which occupied much of downtown Rockville Center until 1978 when both companies moved out and were replaced by IBM corporate headquarters . IBM returned in 1999 after IBM America became all private again following divestitures by several large tech companies including Microsoft Windows software company InterActiveCorp., AOL Time Warner Interactive Inc., Yahoo! Inc., Google Earth Inc., AOL Music Corp., Apple Inc.'s online music service iTunes Store LP etc.; making it one of only a few major tech firms still headquartered in downtown Manhattan It was also during these years that rock band Kiss played their last show at Madison Square Garden before moving permanently out westward across country

Rockville Centre is located on the border of both Westchester and Rockland counties. The town's first settler was Nicholas Nevin, who arrived in 1784 from England with his family. In 1837, a group of Scotsman led by Alexander Macdonald built a small farmstead on what is now Main Street in what is today Watertown. They called it "Nevinstown". The name changed to "Rockville Centre" in 1881 when the Town Board granted a land grant to John Cranch for the purpose of erecting a public school and burying its dead. At that time there were only five white residents living in Rockville Centre - four men and one woman - while all nine black residents lived nearby on Long Island Sound. The present day downtown area of Rockville Centre was developed between 1881 and 1907 during which time many buildings were erected such as the Masonic Lodge (1887), Bank Building (1892), Post Office (1896), Red Cross Hospital (1901), Presbyterian Church (1903), and American Legion Post No. 1 (1907). During World War II many apartments were built within walking distance of military bases like Fort Drum and White Sands Missile Range as well as other important sites including ammunition dumps and airfields across central New York State; these structures are still extant today despite being designated as historical landmarks by local governments or businesses due to their importance in Rockville Center's history or architecture. One notable example is Elmwood Avenue apartment complex which served as Headquarters for higher-ranking UAW officials during this time period In 1965, following passage of the Civil Rights Act Of 1964, African Americans began moving into neighborhoods east of Interstate 95 such as Woodside Heights and southeast of Midtown Manhattan but they did not move into central Rockville Centre until after 1970 when they started experiencing housing discrimination at various business entities like Pocklington Manufacturing Company which produced clothing for Sears Roebuck & Co., among others.
