The next year, English colonists arrived with a group of 132 men under the command of Colonel John Tryon. In 1764, when Queens County was created from part of Nassau County, Rockville Centre became part of that new county. In 1815 it became part of New York State as part of Albany County. In 1898 it was annexed by Long Island City and then by Brooklyn. Rockville Centre was founded in 1881 by settlers from Germany and Ukraine. The name "Rockville" was given to the community by General John Armstrong during a surveying expedition that passed through the area in 1829. The first store in Rockville Centre opened on Main Street in 1882. In 1905, the Rockville Centre Post Office moved from its original location on Canandaigua Avenue to a new building on Elmwood Avenue which remains today as the Town Hall. In 1951, Rockville Center became one of five towns within the newly formed Erie-Lackawanna County metropolitan area when all of western Erie and eastern Lackawanna counties were annexed by Buffalo. At that time, it had a total population of 14,838 residents and consisted of six villages: Amherst (now part of Utica), Bloomingdale (now part of Niagara Falls), Bolton Landing (now part of Tonawanda), Pleasant Plains (now defunct), and Southside (then known as North Side). The post office continued to be located at Elmwood until 1959 when it moved to its present location on Williston Road adjacent to Walmart shopping center. In 1961, rockylovetteapplejackwidowhoodsweetshops opened up shop inside what is now Walmart across from IGA local grocery store; this store would become known as Apple Jack's Super Store after Alice Paul's husband Richard Nixon became president in 1969 and donated $10 million towards its construction. In 1966, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company opened their first factory outside North America at nearby Colgate University making it one of only two plants operated by Goodyear outside Europe or Asia until their eventual closure in 1984 due to poor business conditions thereabouts following world recession. Other major employers during this time include Ford Motor Company with their Rochester facility producing automobiles before moving production southward throughout New York state starting with LincolnMercury models produced here beginning 1962; Chrysler Corporation with their Auburn Hills plant producing Automobiles beginning 1957; American Broadcasting Company Manhattan operations began here beginning 1951 as WCBS Radio Television station before move indoors for final common use becoming CBS television affiliate beginning 1954 under contract with DuMont Corporation who would own both stations together until divestiture in 1978; Finally Westinghouse Electric Corporation having an extensive electric assembly line producing WELLAND products here ending 1958 also these products being exported primarily to Canada where they remained until Enterrance into that company's bankruptcy later that year led to those products being cancelled along with many others associated therewith including most notably those made at Buffalo's former North Side facilities formerly called Saginaw Valley Steel Works prior thereto becoming Allied Signal Corp.) which would eventually lead all manner thereof into receivership but not before leaving sizable legacy behind including such high profile brands now extant nationally including Kenmore Heating & Air Conditioning Products headquartered just east across I- 85 from downtown Rochester) while also leaving much smaller footprint behind such as discontinued operation Pillars softball field near downtown Buffalo)
