Rockville Centre is a town in New York, United States. It is the northernmost incorporated municipality in New York and was formed from part of the former village of Westchester. The population was 44,853 at the 2010 census, up from 41,715 at the 2000 census. Rockville Centre is included in the Clinton–Dudley area. The town began as a small community on Long Island Sound near where present-day East Woodbury sits today. A wharf was built there by John Duryea to load goods for Fort Niagara during the American Revolutionary War. In 1784, George Washington purchased land east of what is now Rockville Centre and founded Westchester County around it. In 1802, he nominated James Ketchum as his successor as president of the United States and Ketchum chose to continue living in Westchester County rather than move to new territory that would be created when Congress carved out New York State from old Pennsylvania. In 1818, real estate developers Nicholas Myron and Augustus Kelley bought 1,500 acres (4 km2) north of modern-day Rockville Centre for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). They named their development "Westchester", after their home county in England where they had long been resident since childhoods spent traveling there with their father or grandfather on business adventures or pleasure trips to London's Regent's Park and Hampton Court Palace gardens; these visits opened up many opportunities for display of fine English country estates by Americans who were becoming increasingly aware of British aristocratic liberalism through such travels abroad during this period.
