The population was 61,553 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city on Long Island after New York City. It is the county seat of Nassau County and home to many high-tech companies and research institutions. The first settlers in what would become Rockville Centre were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624. They named their land "Rochester" because of its resemblance to a rookery they had seen while exploring the island. The town's name came from two large rocks that stood near the intersection of Route 11 and Main Street. A post office called Rochesterville was established in 1822, and by 1827, the town had a population of fifty residents. Rockville Centre was incorporated as a village on April 4, 1903, with a population of just over one hundred people. The Village Board voted 5-0 to change its name to Rockville Centre on November 3, 1903. That same year saw Rockville Centre's first parade which featured local dignitaries such as Mayor John Jaffe and School Superintendent Charles Purdy along with several military units from nearby Westchester County. In 1916, during World War I, Rockville Centre played host to America's largest troop mobilization ever when more than three million soldiers from across America converged on the small town for training purposes only days before war started...the event remains one of history's most iconic tourist experiences today In 1942 during World War II some employees at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft plant #1 were among those who helped build Moses Lake as part of American Military Government Operation Neptune's Spear which resulted in Japan surrendering

Rockville Centre has been inhabited by humans since at least 814 AD when it was called "Rochester". The name may derive from the Iroquois word "konkonto", meaning "bridge over the river". In 1664, General William Howe built Fort Tryon here to protect his army against French forces under Louis XIV. After King George III's victory in 1781, Rockville Centre became an important military installation. Its role declined during the American Revolution but resumed following America's victory in that conflict. The city experienced rapid growth after World War II as millions of Americans moved into its swelling suburbs. However, economic stagnation and recent cuts to education and public services have led to a large-scale downtown exodus in recent years; however, some businesses have begun to regenerate around town center areas like Main Street and Central Park West.
