When the United States of America was founded in 1776, there were many questions and concerns about the new nation. One of these concerns was how to protect its citizens from outside threats. One answer to this question may have been guns, which at that time were seen as a necessary part of the American way of life. One group who contributed to gun development in the US were contractors called Sharps Brothers. In 1836, one company, James Dixon & Sons, produced what is considered to be the first successful revolver- an 1841 model named the “Old Model”. This revolver had a barrel length of 44 inches and it fired a black powder cartridge known as Wadsworth cartridges. The first African American to live in Rockville Centre was Abraham Greenleaf who arrived there in 1842. In 1795, the proprietor of a sawmill along with some other investors organized a company to purchase 2 million acres (8 km²) of land northwest of what is now Rockville Centre for $3 per acre ($60 million). This became known as "Westchester County". With this new land acquisition and construction of roads and bridges, life began to improve for those living near Present-day Rockville Center. In 1800, John D’Arcy founded D’Arcy & Company which manufactured goods including shoes and hats for export to Europe. In 1814, David Levy opened Levy's Drug Store on Main Street which became one of the most popular businesses in town until its closure in 1978 due to competitive pressures from larger competitors such as CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens Boots Alliance . One year later – on May 25th – an event that would forever change rockVILLE CENTER occurred when residents approved the building of Westchester County's first high school - Clinton High School - opening September 1st., 1815 .
