Rockville Centre was founded in 1892 and is one of the oldest communities in New York. The community is located on a large, remote tract of land that has been passed down from the original settlers. In 1895, Rockville Centre became the home to the Rockville Rifle Club which met there until 1957 when it moved to Westchester County. In 1934, the Rockville Centre Golf Course opened and served as an important part of the community until it closed in 1978. Rockville Centre is a town in Rockville Centre County, New York, United States. The population was 14,860 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. According to the US Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and (1.5%) is water. The first settler in what became Rockville Centre was Abram Morse in 1824. The community's name derives from nearby Rockville Hill, which served as a local landmark until it was destroyed by a fire in 1878. In 1865, George Washington Carver bought some of the land where Rockville Centre now stands for $2 per acre (0.10 per square kilometer). Carver named his farm "Carvers' Corner." In 1892, Dutchman Cornelius Vanderbilt donated 1,000 acres (500 hectares) of forested land east of present-day Centerline Road and south of Interstate 95 to help build a schoolhouse and other public buildings for the village of East Aurora on Long Island Sound about 12 miles away from downtown Rockville Centre. The first school in what would become Rockville Centre opened on October 15th, 1893 with 114 students attending grades one through twelve under instruction by Reverend Amos Eaton and Mrs. Fannie Eliza Keyes Weemsinger/Williams-Eaton; later renamed after Reverend Abel Douglass because that man also came from East Aurora to lead its founding congregation there in 1895–96 when that village's only church burned down on December 3rd during an ice storm; Douglass then founded Our Savior’s Episcopal Church there while visiting his old home across Main Street from Emmons Avenue – cornerstone ceremony held at his home on January 6th 1896; original meeting place moved to First Methodist Episcopal Church located off Main Street opposite current day Home Depot building following erection & dedication ceremonies February 17th 1896; Congregational services were held there until 1955 when Roman Catholic services were inaugurated along with primary education available therein starting September 25th 1954 thru present day In 1905–06 new Baptist churches were built adjacent to First Methodist Episcopal Church including Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish soon afterwards erected adjoining Second Baptist Church – both churches remain extant today holding services every morning excepting Christmas Day due to lack of space inside First Methodist EpiscopalChurch . By 1910 more than 100 businesses had been established including many meatpacking plants situated near present day Home Depot parking lot among others especially notable being Armour Opticals Corporation which operated outbuildings on Elmira Boulevard just north of I-95 exit 123A near KFC restaurant & movie theater prior thereto moved elsewhere circa 1960 brick plant constructed subsequent thereto next door facing I-95 stigma & surrounded by unused office park property formerly occupied by Wachovia bank

Rockville Centre is a town in Rockville Centre County, New York, United States. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Rockville Centre was John Armstrong who arrived on July 4, 1784 with his family from Scotland. He named the area "Armstrongstown" after his father-in-law and fellow settler James Armstrong. In 1814, German immigrants Peter and Wilhelm Hoffman bought land east of today's Main Street and renamed it Hoffmanstown. In 1825 they sold their holdings to Matthias Engelbach and started building a woolen mill on the site that still stands today. That same year, Engelbach married Catharine Rothenberg and started calling his new place "Rothenbergs Mills". In 1830 he built a grist mill on the site which still stands today as Rothenberg Grist Mill #4 (now operated by West Seneca Creekkeeper). On February 11, 1834, when Rockville Centre became part of Erie County due to its location within the newly created county line at the southern tip of Seneca Lake%, its post office opened under the name "Rochester". At that time it had a population of only 2 people living in four rented rooms near Main Street between Elm and Cornelia Streets (). On April 15th 1840 , local residents united with other towns in western Erie County to form what would become Buffalo Township () when Rochester became too large for Erie County’s three districts (). By 1860 there were over 10 thousand people living in Rochester proper (), some spread out along Elm or Park streets (). On December 12th 1861 , Mayor John Purdy turned down an offer from Buffalo Township for 1/3rd of all township land north of State Road 522 because he felt that this section should be given to Buffalo as part of villagehood status for Rochester proper (). This rejection set off a heated battle between Purdy and trustees Edwin Ahern (Mayor since 1865) over who should have control over development within their respective wards (), eventually leading to Ahern winning an arbitration suit against Purdy claiming $1 per acre () . The dispute finally ended when both men agreed to dividethe lands into two areas - one split evenly between them based off township population size (), whilethe other formed Rothesburg Township which would grow rapidly thanks partly to waves of Polish refugees arriving during World War II . The name "Rockville Centre" perhaps originated with this periodical article about town growth published by J&L Myers & Co.,nl which originally called attention to new arrivals throughout upstate New York during the early 1800s
