Rockville Centre is located on the border of Niagara Falls State Park and Niagara Falls City Park. The Village of Rockville Centre was first settled in 1785 by Captain John Denny and his family from Connecticut. The Dennys were one of the early families to come to this area and purchase land around what would become Rockville Centre. In 1823, Colonel John Ellicott founded Fort Erie on the north bank of the Erie Canal just east of present-day Ballston Lake. The fort served as an outpost for settlers moving westward through what is now Saratoga County. In 1828, Colonel Ellicott laid out a town lot within what is today Rockville Centre on the northeast side of Ballston Lake. That same year, he named it after his friend and fellow Colonel Edwin Mears who had fought in Mexico during its Mexican War (1846-48). At first, only white men lived in Rockville Center; later black residents also came here beginning in the late 1800s as Methodists began coming for religious reasons to serve as ministers in nearby Buffalo – then under slaveownership – and look for better working conditions than they experienced back home with their owners. At various points throughout its history,Rockville Centre has been known as "the most beautiful village on earth." Today it still retains much that makes it special: its cobblestone streetscape, friendly people and an abundance of cultural attractions including several dozen restaurants and bars which are open nightly or weekdays until 2 A.M., making it one of North America's most vibrant nightlife destinations Rockville Centre was host to three Olympic Games: 1896 (the first modern Olympics), 1924 (the fourth modern Olympics) and 1928 (the fifth modern Olympics). Some notable athletes who have participated in these games include Jesse Owens (gold medalist at 200m hurdles), American basketball player Wilt Chamberlain (!), Canadian ice skater Scott Jurek (!), marathoner Pietro Mennea (=Pietro Mennea) and world champion wrestler Jack Dempsey (=Jack Dempsey).
