The Rochester Rifles company was founded in 1868 by Amos Winchester and J.B. Stroud, two of the most prominent riflemen of their time. The company produced a wide variety of firearms including shotguns, rifles, handguns, and machineguns. In 1892, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to become Winchester-Winchester Firearms Corporation. The company continued producing firearms until 1998 when it was bought by American Outdoor Brands Incorporated.

Rochester, New York is a city in the Finger Lakes region of New York state. The population was 567,545 as of the 2010 census and it is the 11th-largest city in New York State. Rochester is on the US–Canadian border and shares borders with Canaday Buffalo to the south and Ontario to the north. The first settlement in what is now Rochester was made by French traders on Lake Ontario in 1724. The area became part of Kings County when that county was created from parts of Genesee, Monroe, and Wayne counties in 1814. In 1823, Rochester became a city under the name of Rochesterburgh. It changed its name again to Rochester in 1827 after becoming a part of New York state as part of the enlarged state. The city's current name comes from its location at the mouth of Muskegon Creek which empties into Lake Erie at Rochestersville. In 1899, two brothers named Alfred Mclntyre bought land on Muskegon Heights east of downtown for $1 million dollars and started construction on what would become known as Mclntyre Manor − one of only a few large planned communities built in America during that time period. By 1916, Mclntyre Manor had been renamed Midtown Village after developer Moses Harnick founded Midtown Corporation to develop other areas near downtown including Midtown Park (now University Place). In 1954, Harnick developed One hundred thirty-six acres (12 km²) northeast of downtown into Northside Community College Park which remains an industrial site today despite being landscaped by local residents over years. During World War II, many people worked for General Motors plant at Bay City Arsenal where munitions were produced until 1945; most notable among them were Jock Mahoney who served as production supervisor from 1941 until his death in 1973 and Joe McNamara who served as assistant production supervisor from 1944 until his death alsoin 1973. Also located at Bay City Arsenal were United States military vehicles manufacturing plant No 2−North American Aviation Plant−(later Convair), conversion center for P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes used by RAF/USAAF during World War II; this facility eventually closed down due tobudget cuts within Convair following their merger with Lockheed Aircraft Company
There is a long and varied history of gun lights, dating back to the 18th century. Early firearms used candles or oil lamps to illuminate the firearm in use, which was difficult to do with a hand-held lantern. One early type of lighted handgun was the fusilier, which consisted of a small aluminized tube filled with either oil or wax (a mixture of beeswax and paraffin) that was affixed to the barrel by means of a short strap. The earliest handguns were not very reliable and often malfunctioned, so it took some time for firearms manufacturers to develop more reliable methods for illuminating handguns. In 1875, Samuel Colt developed the revolver using an improved muzzleloader design that allowed him to fire multiple rounds without reloading. By 1880, all major American firearm manufacturers had adopted this new technology and began marketing their handguns under various brand names such as Colt .45 caliber revolvers, Smith & Wesson .357 magnums, Ruger No 6 rifles, and Remington 870 shotguns. Gun lights continued to be used interchangeably throughout this period until about 1910 when they became more specific types such as searchlights (used on warships) or flare guns (used in artillery). After World War I ended hostilities in Europe and many weapons were destroyed or confiscated by the victors, further development ceased until about 1945 when primary use switched from personal pistols/shotguns into military rifles/pistols. By the early 21st century, the use of lights on guns had become more common. In 1885, a British scientist named George Stephenson patented a gun that used an electric light to illuminate the bore of the barrel. The device was called an "electric rifle." The first handguns using internal lights were created in 1898 by Gustav Holst and Alfred Nobel. They were called " pistol pistols." These pistols used two mercury-vapor lamps as sights and fired from a single round magazine. In 1903, Major John J. Pershing developed what is now known as the M1911 handgun with its 3-inch barrel and adjustable sights. This handgun was chambered for 7mm rounds and could be operated with either manual or electronic fire control systems.

His family had connections to the Clinton and Deane families, who were among the early settlers of what is now upstate New York. The Conte family became one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the area. In 1827, Nicholas-Jacques' son, Isidore Conte Jr., founded the University of Rochester as a private institution for men. In 1881, the university merged with SUNY ( State University of New York), making it one of the largest universities in America. The university's growing enrollment led to construction of a new main campus on what is now Main Street in downtown Rochester.
