They discovered an abandoned fur trading post on October 15th that they called Fort Augustus after King Augustus II of Poland who had visited them earlier that year on his way to take possession of part of Canadawest Territory which lay between Lake Erie and Niagara Falls

Rochester is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit this area were French Catholic missionaries in 1624. The first permanent settler in what is now Rochester was Nicholas Sarum, who arrived in 1701. He founded the town on a lot he purchased from the Mohawk Indians. In 1786, General George Washington visited Rochester while on his way to battle the British at Saratoga Field. At that time (1786), Main Street crossed Cherry Hill Road near present-day Canandaigua Street and Washburn Avenue served as its main thoroughfare; it continues to do so today. In 1814, War of 1812 veteran John Armstrong erected a flagpole at what is now Auburn Hills Park to commemorate his victory over American forces at Battle of Aspinwall Creek; later that year he donated land for what would become Central High School which opened in 1827. In 1899, construction began on the current structure which was completed in 1903 and serves as the town's administrative center and school district headquarters until 2003 when it became home to Griggs Charter School located across from City Hall Plaza. The Erie Canal connected Buffalo with Cleveland via Rochester; traffic along this route increased during Prohibition because alcohol could no longer be bought or sold within one thousand feet of any business licensed to sell liquor by law (this restriction still remains). After prohibition ended in 1933, traffic decreased but continued to grow when truckers moved into central Rochester because Interstate 95 bypassed this city then-on-the-outskirts due eastward progress on that highway since then Interstate 55 service has supplemented I-95 through downtown ROC since 1991 making it possible for people living within easy driving distance of either city centre or suburban peripheries without fear of getting lost should they leave their neighborhoods for even an afternoon during peak hours - especially if they are travelling out overnight after being pulled over by police while driving under public intoxication laws... This mix has led some observers to believe that '"Rochester has become more like Detroit than ever before"[26]'. However other observers have argued[27][28] convincingly[29][30] that Downtown’s recent resurgence owes much more to long term investment by Binghamton businessmen than anything specific about downtown Rochester itself […]
