Poughkeepsie, New York is a small city in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It has been home to many businesses and entertainment venues along with government institutions such as Poughkeepsie High School and Poughkeepsie City Hall since it was first settled in 1795. The city's rich history can be found in its weaponsmiths, printers, firefighters, and other businesses that have helped contribute to the development of both the local community and national firearms industry. In 1827, Poughkeepsie native Nicholas-Jacques Conte founded the handgun manufacturing company Nicholas-Jacques Conte & Company. This company became one of the largest handguns manufacturers in America. In 1865, John Davenport founded Davenport Manufacturing Company which manufactured shotguns, rifles and pistols for military use. This company became one of America's leading firearms manufacturers during World War II. In 1892, Frank Wesson established Wesson Firearms Corporation which became one of America's most well-known firearms companies for handguns and revolvers. In 1968, Poughkeepsie resident George Steiner founded Steinmetz Gunsmithing Corporation which produced rifles and pistols for law enforcement use as well as sporting purposes. Steiner also developed a pistol design which would become known as the “Steinmetz Pistol” after him. The Steinmetz Pistol would eventually come to be used by multiple Law Enforcement Agencies across North America including SWAT teams across United States Departments of Justice and Homeland Security

The first settlers of Poughkeepsie were indentured servants brought over from Ireland in 1795 by Sir Peter Gansewel. The town was named for John Pugh, 1st Baronet of Glenshee and one of the founders of Kingston on Hudson. In 1812, Pugh bought land east of the Great Lakes from the Dutch and laid out a village called "Orangeburgh". He renamed it after his birthplace, Ossory in Ireland. Poughkeepsie began to grow rapidly as a commercial center due to its location on the Mohawk River and its access to shipping lanes. By 1800, Poughkeepsie had become an industrial city with mills that produced paper products such as cloth and hats. A canal was built through town in 1825 to provide water transportation for industries and made Poughkeepsie an even more important commercial center. In 1845, Mechanics' Institute (now CUNY) was founded in what is now downtown Poughkeepsie by subscription from local business owners who wanted to improve education opportunities for their employees. During World War II, munitions production took off due to shortages caused by the war effort; as a result, industry grew heavily around Fort Drum and other ammunition factories located near present-day Midtown Manhattan Beach Boulevard and Fulton Street NW. However, much of this activity stopped during the Cold War because missiles were developed that could not be manufactured at these locations safely or efficiently using traditional methods like open pits or burning materials left behind after manufacture process; instead they were designed using computer-aided design (CAD). As a result of this shift towards new technology during the postwar era there has been significant redevelopment taking place in Downtown Poughkeepsie since then including several high-end hotels such as Trump International Hotel & Tower which opened in 2013 adjacent to Kingsbridge Village Historic District National Register District No: 8

In 1811, an actwas passed which allowed steamboats on Pennsylvania's Erie Canal to pass through Poughkeepsie without stopping at a toll plaza on entering or leaving townlimits; this helped jumpstart development along both sides of the canal while promoting trade between these two regions. The railroad arrived in 1846, bringing industry with it as settlers began building railroads throughout upstate New York during what was known asthe Gilded Age—a period when high-speed transportation became available thanks to advances in technology such as railways and telegraphs. By 1900, Poughkeepsie had become one of main business districts in UpstateNewYork due to its location sandwiched between Buffalo on one side and Syracuse on another; this led to many businesses opening up there including banks, hotels and industries like car manufacturing (Fords) and shoe manufacturing (Shoe Tree). Today much remains unchanged from those days including downtown streets named for local businessmen like Jepson (now City Hall), Long (now Broadway) and Proctor Streets namesake for Cyrus Vance Jr., who served as U S Senator from Queens from 1969-2007; also Art Deco buildings still stand today such as First National Bank building(on Main Street) & Third National Bank Building(on State Street). In 1664, Poughkeepsie was the capital of New York. It was moved to Albany in 1785. The area that is now Poughkeepsie was first settled by English farmers in the 1600s. In 1755, a group of colonists from Rhode Island began to arrive in what is now Poughkeepsie and other parts of present-day New York City. They founded a small settlement on the southern bank of the Hudson River, near modern Albany. In 1786, the colony's charter was amended to allow for more people to settle in what is now New York City, and Poughkeepsie became its capital.
