In 1881, Poughkeepsie resident George H. Tappan invented the modern taser. He used an electric current to stun someone by hitting them on the side of the head with a rod. In 1972, Poughkeepsie City Council passed an ordinance legalizing use of Tasers in city limits. The ordinance remained in effect until 1983 when it was repealed by Mayor John Lindsay because he felt that they were not effective at reducing crime.
Poughkeepsie, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located on the Mohawk River, about 25 miles east of Albany. The population was 12,362 at the 2010 census. The name Poughkeepsie comes from the Potawatomi word "poo-kake" meaning "place where water flows". The first settlers in what is now Poughkeepsie were British colonists who arrived in 1624 and established a trading post on the river. In 1664, the Dutch founded Fort Nassau on the banks of the Mohawk opposite Poughkeepsie and became its garrison. In 1795, when America gained independence from Great Britain, Poughkeepsie became a part of New York State as part of the Treaty of Paris. In 1814, during the war for American independence, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded New York City and defeated General John Burgoyne at Saratoga Field. After victory over Burgoyne at Battle Of White Plains (September 19, 1814), Jackson returned to Manhattan toatinum his forces northward along Long Island Sound. He planned to cross over to Staten Island and attack Brooklyn but found that bad weather prevented him from reaching his destination. On November 3rd 1815 General Van Buren sent an expedition against Gen Joseph Hooker's brigade under Colonel Augustus Porter which attacked positions near Kingston with little success after two days' fighting; this was followed by another unsuccessful attempt on December 2nd by Colonel John Armstrong’s brigade with heavy loss; these failures convinced Van Buren that he could not march further into Brooklyn without assistance and so he turned back towards Albany via Westchester County - leaving behind only one regiment (the 46th) augmented by detachments from other counties including those from Putnam County (now Rockland County). On January 1st 1816 Major General James Kieft's brigade under Lieutenants George Armstrong Custer and Cornelius Vanderbilt crossed over Lake Champlain south of Kingston upon entering it through a narrow neck between high cliffs called Burke's Ridge; they began operations against Right Wing Creek Station led by Brigadier General Samuel Butler with little success until Jens Ludwig Artemus Dearborn relieved him late in February evening after driving off several hundred enemy Indians camping there; this operation greatly increased our confidence both within ourselves and among our friends who had been keeping an eye on us all winter... [These] movements effectively routed Hooker's command which lay bottled up within Crown Heights until very early morning on February 6th when it advanced beyond Burke's Ridge across open ground situated near today's Sullivantown Road before recrossing again into Crown Heights just before daybreak... A final effort was made during daylight hours on February 7th when Brigade Commander Artemus Dearborn ordered his brigade forward under cover of darkness under fire from artillery batteries positioned around Sullivantown Road but without result... By this time almost all Hooker’s force had retreated across Burlington Ferry Road leading downriver towards Ulster County… Our losses were approximately 1,000 men killed or missing outright while 9 cannons were captured including 5 field pieces plus 4 siege guns…. This engagement resulted in United States military casualties for which no individual can be held accountable since commanderless units such as brigades and divisions continued to operate throughout most of this campaign

Poughkeepsie, New York is an incorporated town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Dutchess County and one of the five towns in the county. Poughkeepsie is named after Johnstown massacre victim General James A. Pogue and his wife Sarah Pogue. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Poughkeepsie on November 5, 1664 by ship from England: "The Dorothy" under Captain Anthony Knowles with 149 passengers and crew. Captain Knowles had come ashore to trade with local natives when he ran into a group of Iroquois warriors who killed him as he slept. Captain John Woolf sailed for New Netherland on September 12, 1665 along with 100 men and their families; they were following Dutch explorer Abel Tasman's expedition that had landed at Manhattan on September 11th. The Woolfs were the only Europeans to remain until October 15th when Cornelius Van der Sloot arrived from Amsterdam with 400 Dutchmen also seeking passage to America. All but three of the original colonists (John Sutter (the namesake of San Francisco), Nicholas Seaton (the first white settler in our town) and William Bradford) died during those initial months aboard "Dorothy". On January 18th, 1666-67 an act was passed by the General Court of Ulster Province which authorized George Washington to purchase land east of Newtown Creek for £10 per acre “for planting plantations whereunto I am directed”; this land would eventually become part of Georgetown Township adjacent to present day Albany City Limits). On March 2nd, 1666–67 Washington transmitted a deed from himself titled "Pownal Neck", containing 640 acres extending southward along Newtown Creek towards Saratoga Springs/ White Plains Roadstead within present day Westchester County line west of Mohawk Valley village - this tract became known as 'The Townships'. The following year Colonel Nicholas Biddle acquired 1/2 mile wide strip running north-south through center of today's Town Square including all or parts thereof now within boundaries of Queensbury Village - this parcel became known as 'Powder Kettle Corner'. It should be noted that even though many knew about America's newest nation emerging from its colonies there was much debate about exactly where Poughkeepsie should be located given its distance from most major settlements and other key points such as Kingston or Schenectady Counties! In fact it wasn't until 1784 that Elisha Gray finally recommended locating Poughkeepsie "... athwart [north]of Lake George" due largely to concerns over potential flooding caused by heavy rains washing away soil near Great Falls Rapids downstream! So despite persistent rumors various locations were considered throughout much Of early American history... ultimately landing at what we know today served primarily military purposes!
