The history of scopes and telescopes in Poughkeepsie, New York can be traced back to 1854 when the first telescope was erected on the campus of Poughkeepsie College. The telescope was built by Professor George Gamow and was used for research into astronomy. In 1916, the Carnegie Institution of Washington donated a collection of astronomical objects to Poughkeepsie College which included a number of scopes dating back to the 18th century. The original Mount Wilson Observatory, located in Tucson, Arizona, also housed a variety of telescopes during its time as an observatory. These telescopes were used for research into astronomy and other sciences such as physics and chemistry. In 1919, Poughkeepsie College acquired another telescope which underwent restoration and operations between 1951-1963. The new telescope was named after Dr. Edwin Hubble which helps identify objects in space with greater accuracy than any previous telescopic observations. Additionally, the history of scopes in Poughkeepsie can be traced back to 1892 when Wescott Brothers constructed what is now known as “the world’s first scientific instrument” at their glass factory in Utica, New York City. This instrument consisted of two lenses that were mounted on an equatorial mirror that allowed it to observe celestial objects with unprecedented accuracy and detail. Unfortunately, this instrument was destroyed in a fire soon after its construction. However, thanks to donations from various individuals and groups throughout history, including Dr. Edwin Hubble himself, we are able to enjoy today’s Scopes Museum in Poughkeepsie which contains many examples of antique telescopes as well as modernscopes dating back to the 20th century!

This tension culminated in a series of riots in 1919-1920 called the Kingston Riot which left four people dead and hundreds injured; these events helped lead to passage of laws limiting development in one of America’s most densely populated areas. Today, Poughkeepsie remains an agricultural community with a focus on dairy products and other agricultural produce; however, it continues to be home to some of America’s most popular tourist attractions such as Niagara Falls and Central Park
Poughkeepsie is located in the town of Poughkeepsie, New York. It was formed from part of the towns of Westchester and Milford in 1824. The first settler in what would become Poughkeepsie was Nicholas Young who arrived in 1797. The town was originally called "Hercules" because a giant mountain stood near where it now stands. After Alexander Hamilton's death, his wife, Eliza de Rothschild gave the town its present name of Poughkeepsie which she had heard while living in Scotland.
