In 1624, Dutch colonists began arrive followed by French Huguenots who founded La Fayetteville in 1627; both groups established fur trading posts along the Hudson River valley and exchanged goods with Native Americans. By 1700, over fifty Dutch families had settled at present day Poughkeepsie while several hundred French also lived there before being driven out during King George's War (1745-49). Jesuit missionaries founded two small missions near where Poughkeepsie now stands: Montresor and Kligwadge about 1804 and these continued operations until 1763 when all Jesuit missionaries were expelled by British forces during American independence due to their support for Britain during the Seven Years' War (1754-63). In 1785, construction began on Albany's South Bridge which connected Downtown Manhattan with Fort Orange on Governors Island; this bridge remained operational until 1840 when it was replaced by the current suspension bridge over Hudson River built by Ebenezer Howard Sr., one of America's leading contractors of infrastructure projects during his time as president of Columbia Ferry Company . During Andrew Jackson's Presidency (1829-37), much progress was made towards developing what would become known as Jacksonian Democracy including plans to move West Point Military Academy from its then rural location near Kingston to nearby White Plains after years of protests led by General James Wilkinson; however this project never materialized because money ran short following Jackson's inauguration as President on January 20th, 1830 . The townspeople responded enthusiastically to entrepreneur Nicholas Astor Jr.'s offer for them to be given control over all sugar cane production throughout New York State after he purchased land around what are now downtown Poughkeepsie and Tomkins Manor , east end streets between High Street and Clinton Avenue . This decision marked a turning point for local politics asAstor became one of the most influential figures in early 19th century New York City ... In 1847 Astor donated $10 million dollars towards building what would become Madison Square Garden – making him one of only two people ever to give away that much wealth outside his own family . A number of stores opened within downtown Poughkeepsie circa 1830 including Mr & Mrs Stevens’ Grocery Coon Rapids ; Mr Haggerty’s Hardware Store ; Wessel & Sons Millinery ; Gosset’s Drug Stores Inc.; First National Bank Building; Cramer Bros Bakery Inc.; Masonic Temple No 2; Stroud Athletic Club House #1; Episcopal Church - Parish Hall Annexe #2 etc... One important store that did not open until after 1830 was Sam Adams Brewery opened next door to Gosset’s Drug Stores Incorporated on Broadway just south side High Street corner Clinton Avenue The Panic Of 1893 led directly to social unrest culminating in riots taking place throughout late 1800′s culminating near Central Park where 300+ rioters burned down 30 buildings .. Afterladenteed1896 failed attempt at railroad crossing caused serious derailmentnear Central Park resultingin 3 deaths .... rapids became increasingly dangerous as water levels rose contaminating drinking water sources for many residents ............ Many businesses closed their doors due largelyto lackof customers tryingto escape polluted waters .......... major floods occurred 1937/38and 1951 .............. final chapter: closing days 1975 thru 1978 .........

Poughkeepsie, New York is a small town located in the north-central portion of the United States. The population of Poughkeepsie was 10,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tompkins County, New York metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Poughkeepsie were Scottish immigrants who arrived in 1624. They built a log cabin on Cattaraugus Lake and named it "Poughkeepsie." The early residents were mostly farmers and their families supplemented their income by fishing and hunting. In 1814, Yankee Major James Clinton garrisoned Fort George on Rensselaer Island to protect America's northern border with Canada. American traders began to arrive in increasing numbers along the eastern seaboard, which led to increased demand for goods from Poughkeepsie merchants. In 1825, Yankees built a fur trading post at nearby Kingston Landing on Rensselaer Bayou to take advantage of available shipping lanes between Albany and Montreal. During the Revolutionary War, Poughkeepsie was part of patriot forces under General John Burgoyne and sided with Great Britain. On October 25, 1777, when British reinforcements landed at Saratoga Springs for an attack against Washington's army at Ford’s Theatre (now White Plains), some Patriots forced open fire on a Patriot detachment that had been positioned behind cover atop Mount Carmel (northwest of town). One Patriot officer died as a result; another was wounded but not killed outright and made his way back into action later that day On November 3rd , 1777 General Howe ordered all British troops within two miles of Manhattan to disperse or be destroyed .A small group including Patriots under Lt Colonel John Armstrong charged up Mount Carmel after hearing news that Howe's main force had dispersed . After putting down several short engagements with militia before reaching peak altitude they opened fire upon estimated 400+ men commanded by Lt Colonel Armstrong killing him instantly followed shortly thereafter by 4 other militiamen Killed or Wounded: Captains William Hickey (2nd light cavalry) & Nathaniel Greene (1st Dragoon Guards) ; First Lieutenant Benjamin Pierson; Private Edward Braddock
