Poughkeepsie is a small city in the U.S. state of New York, located on the Hudson River in central New York. The population was 105,552 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chenango County and is part of the Rochester–Dutchess Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by English colonists in 1664 as Poughkeepsie Valley and named for Sir Hugh Popham, 1st Baronet (1556-1624), who had settled there during the Dutch colonization of New Netherland in 1624-25. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Doge, who built a ferryboat Landing on what is now Billy Goat Island to export agricultural goods from his farmstead on adjacent Wappingers Falls until he sold it to John Winthrop in 1673. In 1714, George Washington bought three acres (10 hectares) east of present-day Poughkeepsie for $100 from Nicholas Doge's grandson, Nathaniel Adams doge; this land became part of Washington's Mount Vernon estate upon his death in 1799. In 1807, Poughkeepsie proper was divided between Chenango County and Albany County as part of an effort to create a new judicial district that would encompass all of what is now Albany and Buffalo counties; this resulted in much resentment within Poughkeepsie's Democratic Party over their perceived loss of status as a county seat while Albany grew into an even more populous center for political power and education than village like Poughkeepsie had ever achieved before. In 1827, following the passage through Congress of Don Carlos Baciocchi's Indian Removal Act which began America's trek towards demographic open space via de facto annexation by Mexico; all villages within Albany and Buffalo counties were removed from local government so that they could become "tribal reservations" under Mexican jurisdiction with all civil governance reverting back to their original village form once again within two years; this process effectively ended any hope either party may have harbored among its constituents that they might be able to regain control over their own affairs should Mexican rule prove unyielding regarding American immigration policy and demographics wherever they desired rather than subject to whatever Mexican whim or decree deemed most advantageous at any given moment by whichever Flores or Santa Ana administration happened to be occupying those same offices at any given time It took another decade or so for full implementation before actual reservation life outside downtown Phoenix itself began becoming anything resembling normal after being essentially cut off from day-to-day social activities by completeMexican walls erected around downtown Phoenix by 1896 when President McKinley placed federal agents inside Tucson daily during his term office thereby restricting free speech rights inside Mexico City throughout much of what we now refer to as "the 20th century." Poughkeepsie, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poughkeepsie was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as a trading post on the Hudson River. The town was founded on December 13, 1786 as a result of an act of Congress to create new towns within the Province of New York after Sir George Clinton's victory over General Forbes at Saratoga Field. Poughkeepsie was originally named for Colonel John Pugh (1629-1715), one of Clinton's lieutenants and first Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Ulster County. The original settlement lay along what is now Main Street, between Third and Fourth Streets. A smallpox pandemic hit America in 1793, and as a result many settlers died from the disease; however, this did not stop Pugh and his fellow colonists from continuing to build their homes and businesses around what is now Main Street. In 1812 Pugh sold his land east of Center Street to Joshua Barney for $600 In 1814 Amos Fuller organized a militia regiment called "The Pioneers" which fought against Tecumseh during the Battle of Little Big Horn; this event is also celebrated annually by residents as Pioneer Day. On February 10th 1861 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked Poughkeepsie while it slept; this attack led to Union troops occupying the town two days later without any clashes or damage done to either side. The town prospered until 1892 when mining became its primary industry; since then, however, poushkeepsie has lost much economic significance due largely to changes in technology and global competition. today most residents are self-employed professionals or local business owners who use their skills outside their home communities
