Poughkeepsie is a city in New York State, on the north shore of Lake George. The population was 113,824 at the 2010 census. It lies in the westcentral part of the Mohawk Valley and is bordered by Albany to the east, Schenectady to the southeast, Troy to thesouthwest, and Kingston to the northwest. The rising ground that makes up Poughkeepsie's eastern edge forms much of its downtown area. Poughkeepsie was first settled by English colonists in 1614 as a trading post on what is now called "Queen's Road" between Albany and Schenectady. In 1764, it became an act of Parliament under George Washington that designated it as a town within New York state. In 1831, it became one of four towns located in central New York (the others being Plattsburgh, Utica and Clarkson) when Erie County was created from parts ofohio and new york counties. The early history of Poughkeepsie can be traced back to 1614 when English colonists arrived at what is now known as Queen's Road seeking trade with Native Americans who lived near them on higher ground across Seneca Lake. Poughkeepsie is a small town in New York State, located about 26 miles north of Albany. The population was 11,500 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie has been inhabited by various Native American groups for centuries, and its name is derived from the French word "pouchir," meaning to store or hoard. In 1664, Sir George Carteret purchased land in present-day Poughkeepsie and named it Burlington after his home country of Burlington, England. The first post office was established in 1815. The town was incorporated as a village on April 24, 1825. The history of Poughkeepsie goes back to the 16th century when the area now known as Poughkeepsie was part of the Mohawk Nation. In 1524, English colonists founded a fur trading post at what is now Saybrook Village near modern-day Lake Success; this post served as a base for Indian traders and settlers travelling through northern Manhattan County during what is known as the Dutch colonization period (1624-1784). In 1743, troops under General George Washington besieged Fort Orange on Long Island during their unsuccessful attempt to subdue the Iroquois Confederacy; while supplies were being transported across Long Island Sound to Fort Orange through channels provided by Montauk Point (nowSaybrook), some crates containing munitions got ashore on nearby Farmingdale Beach and resulted in an accidental fire that destroyed much of Fort Orange's garrison including Commander John Armstrong and his family who had accompanied Washington's troops into action; these events are commemorated annually with an event called Armstrong's Ghost Memorial Day Parade which takes place on October 5th in honor of those lost at sea during colonial times. DuringRevolutionary War days many Patriot men left New York City for Tory provincial posts such as Poughkeepsie where they joined forces with local militiamen under Colonel Nathanael Greene against British forces commanded by Major General Howe - this area later became known as Westchester County. On November 24, 1776, Continental Congress approved Resolution No 1 passed by Committee of Safety “to recommend to all proper authorities within this Colony Measures for suppressing Insurrection” This resolution authorizes Lieutenant Colonel Benedict Arnold to march westward from Bridgeport with 1 regiment 9 company militia under his command “to relieve & encourage our brethren Aristocrats dispersed thro’out America” – Arnold proceeded immediately northwest along service road Canterbury until he reached Kingston upon Hull then turned northeast towards Oswego following a course parallel with River Raquette – less than two miles from fortifying position On December 2nd Arnold reached fortification positions at Oswego Heights GHQ having traveled approximately 175 miles over difficult terrain without encountering any hostile Indians So very much credit due LtCol Benedict Arnold whose efforts saved Americans lives Aftermath Oliver Cromwell made him major general commanding all British forces east of Pennsylvania By order dated January 12th 1777 Arnold again marchedwestward along service road Canterbury until he arrived at fortifyingposition at Oswego Heights GHQ having traveled approximately 175 miles over difficult terrain without encountering any hostile Indians ordered thereby General James Wolfe dismissed lieutenant colonel so that he could return home sick
