After about a year's trial at Pocahontas Landing during which some settlers died from disease brought over aboard ship by natives, Governor Dongan decided to move forward with plans to establish an outpost here rather than send more men overland to search for land grants around Albany.[3] He named the settlement after his sister-in-law Elizabeth Talkington who had accompanied him on his voyage downriver from England in 1623/24 as part of her dowry.[4] In April 1814 Poughkeepsie voters approved incorporation into Village form following recommendations made by their select board. Incorporation came into effect at 4pm that day with Mayor Moses Green officiating at its signing ceremony at the old Congregational Meeting House located on Main Street between Nassau and State Streets. The vote also Approved a $100 fund set aside specifically forlocal purposes including street improvements and library construction which were started shortly thereafter by Trustees John Witherspoon and James Sloan).[5][6] On October 20th 1834 Poughkeepsie became Town status following similar recommendations passed by Town Board members Harvey DeWolfe (Chairman) & Samuel Morse (Vice Chairman). On February 17th 1898 annexation took place pursuant to provisions of then state law #727[7]. At that time there were only two towns in all of Westchester County - One in Tarrytown north of Yonkers [8], one south near Schenectady [9]. With annexation came new streets and buildings such as Griggs Hall built by George Griggs,[10][11],[12], churches like First Presbyterian[13],[14] followed soon afterwards[15],[16], post office[17],[18], fire department[19],[20] as well as social services like schools likegradeschools Nursery Schools through High School grades local Girl Guides groups Scouts etcetera . plaques honoring those initial founders can be found all around town today . After centuries living side-by-side with Native Americans it wasn't until white developers decided to build something here that locals got interested in making their own version of Buffalo Bill's Wild West showpiece attraction called ' shows'. In 1916 developer Charles Wohl announced plans for what would become known as 'the Park' across Fifth Avenue from Main Street eastward towards Riverside Drive; this project finally opened its doors 25 years later! legal wrangling ensued over who controlled this undeveloped piece of real estate until eventually it reverted back to its original owners - Charles Wohl himself! This enclosed area still remains off limits most days to outsiders but offers stunning views straight out your window!
