It is named for Hugh Pough, an Englishman who settled there in 1672. Poughkeepsie has been inhabited by humans since before the beginning of recorded history. The first mention of what would become Poughkeepsie was in a document from 1488, when Giovanni da Verrazzano noted that "in this place there are people who call themselves Potockies". One theory suggests that Poughkeepsie may have originated as a place where Native Americans could trade goods with Europeans during the early 1600s because it lay near some important strategic points on the frontier between England and France. The first permanent European settlement in present-day Poughkeepsie occurred after Captain John Smith's exploration of what is now Westchester and Putnam Counties in 1624–25. Smith's party included three settlers: Thomas Cushman, Samuel Eaton and Jameson visited the area known as Mohawk Valley then moved on to Fort Orange beyondpresent-day Yonkers. From here they surveyed much of southern New York before returning home by way of Kingston (now Albany). 2 years later, another group led by George Washington explored what is now Putnam County and found it uninhabited. Upon their return trip across Lake Ontario they built Fort Nassau at present-day Ossining which served as a military outpost against Iroquois attacks from within New Netherland until 1764 when those hostilities ended with British victory over the Iroquois at Saratoga National Battlefield near Plattsburgh NJ. This event helped solidify British control over portions of western North America following independence from Great Britain some 12 years later In 1672 Hugh Pough established himself at present day Poug activate about 10 miles north east of modern day Schenectady along Mohawk Creek where he made his livelihood supplying goods to Dutch colonists living along Long Island Sound and Brooklynbridge on Long Island proper; also trading fur with French and English traders operating outwest along Canada’s southern shoreline . In time he became one of largest landowners in town – eventually owning more than 1/5th or allofthe land within its limits! His success enabled him to build many fine homes including Front Street House still standing today, built circa 1712; Backgammon Hall (now used as an office building), built circa 1700; Market Square (later Plaza Theatre), erected c 1810; Stonington Place opposite Town Hall dating back to c 1730 etc., etc., etc….. By 1800 most residents had either fled for safety or migrated westward into Vermont & Connecticut . However scattered remains throughout town identify scores more buildings originally constructed prior to 1800 . Although little evidence exists documenting pre-American settlement activity other than traditional oral histories extolling local hospitality such as “The Potocksians were so kindhearted that we never experienced any bad weather during our whole stay hereabouts” [1], certain items indicative of earlier life such as pottery shards found near current day Main Street indicate human activity within reach long before white contact began! For example several unidentified projectile points discovered just outside current day downtown following extensive archaeological survey2 suggest early Indian encampments close by rather than distant rural locations typically associated with historic village sites like these

Unfortunately for them, Mayor Jameson was well entrenched within city government and successfully defended his position against their challenge. Despite this setback, however, Hawthorne's movement did manage to create some instability within society at large which contributed significantly to later political unrest in Poughkeepsie. Despite these challenges though, through hard work and perseverance over many years Pugh keepsie reached new heights as an economically thriving city-state Rising from obscurity into becoming a key player in American life- even if it sometimes went through difficult times along the way!
