At that time, most Americans lived near Manhattan or Typesettown in Ulster County because these areas were open for settlement and had good soil and timber resources. In 1802, when Albany became the capital of New York State, Poughkeepsie became part of Albany City Limits; however, it continued to be known as "Pougketown." On November 3rd of that year, Alexander Hamilton died at age 76 after a long and successful political career as Governor of New York; he was buried at Christ Church Cathedral in Albany where his remains are still interred today. On December 12th 1814 – four years after Hamilton's death – Mayor James McDonagh laid down the cornerstone for what would become Oneida Community College (now Allegany Community College). The first classes met on January 6th 1815 under instructor Reverend Nicholas Biddlebaugh. A fire destroyed all but one building on campus on May 24th 1818 which delayed enrollment until September 1st; however Classes recommenced September 7th with Professor David Reidman teaching Geography and History! On October 15th 1830 Samuel Morse sent his first message over an electric wire from Baltimore through Kingston (today Bridgeport) back home to Philadelphia via Poughkeepsie! Just three weeks later America's first commercial railway reached this town when construction began on the Erie Canal! Today many people remember those early days when all they could hear were locomotives thundering into town while farmers did their day jobs outside their homes! Today there are many businesses that have been built here such as Macy’s department store being built right next door in 1906 which created quite an economic boom for this area along with other stores like Sears Roebuck & Company who opened up just blocks away starting out as an ice cream parlor in 1901 followed by becoming one of America’s largest department stores . Restaurants like Olive Garden started opening up around this time also giving locals something new to eat outside even if it wasn’t always fresh . All these businesses have given birth to several churches including First Presbyterian Church which stands today adjacent to Oneida Community college just across from Interstate 95
