In the early 1800s, Poughkeepsie was a small farming town in upstate New York. The town was first settled by English settlers in the 17th century. In 1803, Poughkeepsie became a British colony and as such, handguns were not allowed until after the Treaty of Ghent had ended the War of 1812. Due to this prohibition, many individuals who wished to own firearms either could not afford them or did not have permission from their government to do so. As a result, pistols and rifles began becoming more popular among those in Poughkeepsie due to their low cost and easy availability. throughout the 19th century there were sporadic gunfights between British soldiers and American settlers in what is now downtown Poughkeepsie. However, these incidents were rare and generally consisted of just two people exchanging fire without harming anyone else. This changed on July 8th, 1868 when an American soldier named John Brown attacked a military post at Harpers Ferry with his rifle while under cover of darkness. This event led to the Battle of Harpers Ferry which resulted in four Americans being killed and nine wounded. This marked the beginning of what is known as America’s Gunfight for Independence Day. This event also helped spread awareness about firearms ownership within America which would eventually lead to tighter restrictions on handgun ownership across all states by 1889

The early years of Poughkeepsie were quite agricultural with small-scale production taking place around farmssteads scattered throughout rural Columbia County. However, by 1815, manufacturing had become an important factor in village life with tannery owners starting up businesses along Mohawk River which served as a major transportation artery between Albany and Buffalo at that time. With increasing demand for clothier output during the prosperous days of American capitalism following World War I, mills started up all over Adirondack country as well – including one still operating today near downtown Poughkeepsie – but by 1920 only two buildings remain standing from what once comprised more than 100 local businesses active during those years: The Commercial House on Main Street and The Mechanics Shop on Second Avenue South. During World War II many residents enlisted or served in the armed forces; some even created their own companies within their units or formed militias for service overseas. After hostilities ended most soldiers returned home but not all – some chose to stay behind where they could continue working or farming while others invested their time into various aspects of community development such as architecture or engineering design work that would later be seen as hallmark traits of postwar planning efforts led by Mayor Harry Bridgeshank Sr.. One result was what has come to be known as "The Era Of Progress", characterized by increased social mobility through college education among workers earning high incomes while also experiencing dramatic forms of economic expansion both inside and outside Adirondack society generally paralleling trends nationally during this period Despite this progressivism there were occasional flashpoints; notably in 1945 when Bridgeshank ordered construction workers remove a Confederate flag flying from a building next door because its presence violated town policy forbidding public display thereof; subsequent protests forced the managers responsible for erecting it to tear down the structure rather than face possible retribution In addition to its longstanding role as an agricultural center – home to millions of chickens killed annually for feed – Poughkillensie also experienced significant residential growth following World War II due largely to expanding commuting opportunities brought about by Interstate Highway System construction across my state landscape primarily southward…………………………………..
