During World War I, Poughkeepsie played an important role as a munitions production plant; however, much of this activity was moved to more central locations after the war ended. Poughkeepsie, New York is a town in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 15,814 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie is first mentioned in 1624 when Hugh Lenape described it as "ankeckisheeshie" meaning "a place where there are many people." It became part of New York State in 1785. In 1825, John J. Pierpont donated land to create Poughkeepsie Falls and founded the Pierpont Foundation which continues to make donations to various causes in Poughkeepsie today. The first post office opened in 1823, and the town began receiving mail from other parts of New York state beginning on October 1, 1827. The present stadium was built in 1907 and seats over 20,000 people. The town also has two churches: One African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church located on Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue and another Presbyterian church on Park Avenue between Second Street and First Street; both were additions to the town during the latter half of the 19th century as population growth forced businesses out into larger towns or cities. In 1966, Poughkeepsie voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government for thetown with Mayor Tom Canavan as its head until 1974 when he resigned after being indicted on federal corruption charges; City Hall relocated to Middletown after his indictment but continued to issue permits for all manner of activities including concerts by outside artists until finally shutting down due to lack of funding in 2002. On July 1, 2007 Governor Mario Cuomo announced that Poughkeepsie would become one of five communities within a new city-state called Westchester County; this change came about because county legislators objected to plans by then-Town Supervisor Salvatore Unterberger (D), who had been trying since 2000 to have Poughkeepzie become part of Westchester County while still maintaining its own governing body separate from Eastchester County government; Unterberger won re-election that year with nearly 60% of the vote against any opponent while becoming mayor pro tempore). As part of this effort Unterberger also helped come up with a plan which calls for all public buildings within the new city-state - including those serving as police stations - be demolished so that they can be replaced by private entities under contract through 2020 without ever having served public purpose inside or outside the city limits; this program is known as "Newmark's Plan". In January 2009 former Mayor Tom Canavan was charged with bribery conspiracy following revelations that he had given $1 million dollars in bribes over several years while he held office; Canavan has pleaded not guilty and awaits trialbeginning February 2nd 2009 before Judge Loretta Lynchburg He will be followed by Deputy Mayor Ralph Salerno who faces similar charges but no trial date has yet been set
