After being part of Canada for 34 years (1867–1927), it rejoined America following World War II under President Harry S Truman's Executive Order 9981 which granted full citizenship to all aliens living within its borders who had resided in this country continuously since 1917 without losing their right to vote or hold public office. The city's rich heritage comes from its many industries - including papermaking, nickel mining and metalurgy; shipbuilding; textiles; engineering; food processing; real estate development; and manufacturing - which have helped make Poughkeepsie one of America's most entrepreneurial cities.
