Poughkeepsie, New York is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 24,668 at the 2010 census. Poughkeepsie is the namesake of the town and of its first mayor, Nicholas Fenton. The Town of Poughkeepsie was formed from part of the former Village of North Hempstead on February 14, 1792. It consisted of only a few hundred residents and had no government other than that of its own self- governance through village meetings. On July 1st 1807 the Town became an incorporated village with a Mayor and Council as well as schools and other services provided by private individuals or organizations. The present day Town of Poughkeepsie began to form around 1854 when three parcels were purchased from James Ahearn for $2 per acre (the land being now within the limits of both Towns). By 1872 there were over 10 000 people in what is today Poughkeepsie Township with just under 2 000 residents living in 31 buildings scattered throughout 3 wards which are still representative today: Old South Ward (north side), new North Ward (east side), and West Ward (south side). In 1888 NY Statehood granted all towns in Ulster County to become single municipalities uniting all their inhabitants into one political entity free from county jurisdiction except for property taxes which continued to be collected by individual proprietors until 1912 when they were merged into one taxing body called “Ulster County Board”. This change not only increased revenues for the municipality but also created moreMayorial districts with greater responsibility including staff development programs, building permits/construction projects etc.. On May 15th 1924 voters ratified a proposition authorising annexation by Kingston upon Hull with a population increase exceeding 100% over that allowed in anytowns annexed without such approval retaining their right to vote on municipal issues however annexation proceed without further referendum or vote until 1941 when authorization was given for full city status within Municipal boundaries making Poughkeepsie an official city state on December 12th 1941 having previously been designated as a “village” since its incorporation

The first European to set foot on the New York island of Poughkeepsie was Nicholas-Jacques Cartier in 1614. The settlement served as a military post for the French and Indian War, and later as a trading post during the Dutch and British occupations of New Netherland. In 1764, Poughkeepsie became an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of Albany County. The population reached 10,000 by 1820, but declined to 7,500 by 1830 due to waves of immigration from southern Europe and Eastern Europe. By 1850, Poughkeepsie's population had shrunk to 2,500. The town's decline continued until it was burned down by fire in 1871.
