It is the larger of the two towns in Orange County and has a land area of just over 8 square miles (20 km2). The other town, Middletown, had a population of 28,527 at the 2000 census. The first settlers in Port Chester were Englishmen who arrived on the tidal vessels "Eagle" and "Pineapple" in 1624. They built their homes on White Sands Point on Long Island Sound. In 1764-1765, Captain John Montresor and his party of soldiers surveyed what would become Port Chester from afar with some insight into its potential as a site for an American shipyard. In 1800s alone, Port Chester produced more than 2 million pounds (1ton) of saltpeter to help build naval ships and munitions during the War of 1812. In 1836–1837 Commodore James Cook sailed past Cape Ann Heads looking for a new route to Asia that would avoid America's Great Lakes; he named one such headland after then-Governor George Clinton: “Cook’s Head” or “Clinton’s Head” because so many sailors thought it resembled India's Rock Point Peninsula at Benares Head near Bombay in British India (). Commodore Matthew Perry explored this coast during hisopening voyageof 1845 when he penetrated Japan; but no permanent settlement resulted from this event because Japan wanted open ocean trade instead of close commercial ties with China through ports on our coasts.). In 1865–1866 Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Kelley purchased 1/4 acre (0.22 ha) south of present-day Academy Street for $10 from Isaac Sennett II; he named it Westport Landing after President Andrew Johnson who visited Newport News several times while governor general.) Under General Oliver Hazard Perry command troops burned down Sennett’s plantation house in 1863 which disrupted production at nearby Salerno Mills where cotton was processed forexport.) After Perry left office Ulysses S Grant took command and ordered Sherman to burn down most all remaining plantations throughout East Tennessee starting on March 15th 1865 (); however some remnants remain today around Pulaski Country Club off US 62.) On October 24th 1888 then Mayor Samuel Morse announced plans by local farmers using dynamite to demolish old millrace dams which they believed were hindering crop production.; however local newspapers reported that only four houses were destroyed making this incident much less headline grabbing than similar farm fires elsewhere across America .) By 1886 there were over 150 businesses located downtown including laundry facilities (), banks (), grocery stores (), Masonic lodges (), livery stables (), breweries (), cigar stores () as well as three hospitals:, Presbyterian Hospital,) Griggs & Hawley Drugs),()())(). A post office was established at portchester on December 3rd 1892.,)()(). With rapid development came growth rates exceeding 100% every decade until World War I when rates slowed due to prohibition());-)
