Port Chester, New York is a small town located in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern shore of Lake Erie and borders Cleveland to the north and Indiana to the east. The town has a historical focus on salt production and seafood processing. The first evidence of human activity in what is now Port Chester dates back to 9,000 BC when Paleo-Indians discovered salt water pools near present-day downtown. At one time Port Chester was one of the most important salt producing towns in America. Salt production began as early as 11 million years ago when sea level changes created channels that allowed for ocean water to flow into freshwater lakes along the eastern seaboard. In 1673, Isaac Brock purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown from his father-in-law after he won an auction for it in which John Montresor offered two lots of land measuring seventy feet by thirty feet each with a house built on it for $2 per acre (the equivalent of ). The first recorded mention of Port Chester came about 1800 when Captain John Stevens sailed into harbor there after sailing around Cape Horn from England. Stevens landed at what is now Harbor Point on September 15th and unloaded his cargo including lumber, pottery and other items before continuing northwestward upriver towards Cleveland. In 1814 Nicholas Nickerson bought fifty acres ( twenty - five hectares) along the shoreline of Lake Erie from John D’Angelo for $5 per acre ($40 per hectare). NicholasNickerson used this area for farming until 1827 when he sold it to Abraham Goldsmith who built a millrace that still flows through today's downtown core known as "Goldsmith's Canal". He also founded Greenpoint Academy in 1828 which became one of America's leading schools during its late 19th century heyday before closing its doors in 1916 due to budget cuts however some remnants can still be found today within walking distance of modern day Downtown Port Chester! From 1840 until 1850 three mills operated here; One by Obadiah Smith operated out side city limits between Broadview Heights and North End; another by Jacob Wetherbee ran down Pearl St.; while lastly Samuel Morse & Brothers put their flour mill next door at 54 Wall Street into operation producing two thousand pounds (twenty kilograms)of flour daily! By 1860 all three mills had closed down followed by Smith's Mill which caught fire April 3rd1861 just four days shy of its hundredth birthday! This event made national headlines as it signaled an end not only to American but European involvement with salt production in this part ofnorthwest Ohio! A new industry soon sprang up around this point – shipping potatoes – forwarders coming ashore with sacks full or basketsfulsof potatoes were unloading their vessels at Pier 1 opposite Market Square would walk up Marine Dr., go inside Mr Fenton’s grocery store (now called “Fishmarket”), purchase fresh potatoes—which were then frozen–and return themhauling potatoes overland back home across open fields onto flatboats moored outside Hudsonport Terminal where they were loaded onto docked ships bound for Buffalo or Syracuse or even Montreal! Today you can see many reminders related directly or indirectly to these days such as Piers 1&2 Marina property adjoining Fishmarket building currently used by local merchants for storage purposes; Ferry landing opposite current location occupied by Quinnipiac University;Marine Drive extending inland beyond original market square roadway past present day First Baptist Church Building housing Oldest ONeil Aire Tire store prior owner Fritz Pfeiffer’s conversion into apartments following WW II etc etc etc………. nearly every inch redevelopment taking place within city limits during last few decades!!!!!!

Port Chester, New York is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 14,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Fayetteville, NY-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Port Chester was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 and his expedition explored what is now eastern Clinton County. The first permanent settler in what is now Port Chester was Nicholaso Pecoraro in 1712. He named the community for his friend and mentor Giovanni della Porta. By 1800, about 60% of the town's residents were Italian immigrants who had come from Italy during the period of mass migration called the Gilded Age. In 1847, President James K. Polk sent troops to quash a slave insurrection in Georgia and moved American forces into central New York to suppress abolitionist activity there; this event is known as the Battle of Fort Wright (1847). In 1849, Ulysses S.
