Port Chester is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 23,716. The name "Port Chester" is derived from English Harbor and referred to the then-peninsula now within the town limits. The first settlers were Quakers who arrived in 1724. The port at which Port Chester developed was an important center for trade with New England during the early 18th century and became one of the most prosperous towns on Long Island after its opening of a canal in 1784. It declined following Commodore John Adams's attack on British forces at Bunker Hill in 1776 and other military engagements until it experienced a resurgence during both World War II and the postwar boom that followed; however, its fortunes have since changed again as manufacturing has declined and new development has arisen around thetown centre. The central square where many of Port Chester's buildings are located was platted in 1801 by Elias Boudinot as part of what would become known as Burr Ridge Township (now Elgin). The village of Northport was established near what is now State College under similar auspices less than two years later. This period marked another turning point for Port Chester: while villagehood remained an aspiration until very recently, it soon became reality due to community fundraising efforts championed by civic leaders such as Mayor William Fenton and Town Supervisor James Phelan In 1825, land north of State College along Second Avenue was purchased by Nicholas de la Salle for $10 per acre from Patrick Mahony who had founded West Point Military Academy four years earlier. La Salle named his property "Belvidere", or "Beautiful Valley". He built a large mansion there which served as his headquarters throughout his life before moving it to Utica in 1859 when he sold all his remaining lands on Long Island to Cornelius Vanderbilt for $750,000 After Belvidere's death in1865, various parcels were acquired by others including developer Julius Weinreb who donated much of Belle Vernon Terrace east of present-day Main Street to establish what is now Park Slope Village (later Borough) Weinreb also donated land south of Park Slope Boulevard on which he built extensive housing projects including Prospect Heights (now Prospect Park), Woodside (now Ridgewood), Brockton Bayou (later Bensonhurst), East Harlem (later East Harlem Beach), and Hells Kitchen (later Midtown Manhattan). In 1913–14 he also contributed $5 million towards construction of Madison Square Garden In 1922–23 architect Charles Eames designed an addition to La Salle Mansion called Pacific Hall which functioned as both a school gymnasium and home office for La Salle while he lived in Utica In 1930 real estate magnate Samuel Goldwyn bought some rights to use La Salle Mansion's nameplate but never used it himself Following World War II various industrial parks were established around town including Oneonta/Kingsborough(the former Lackawanna Steel mill site) later merged into Rochester Regional Airport; Flushing Meadows/Mansions(the former Corona beer plant site); Somersworth(the former Paper Mill Site); Pittsford(the former Syracuse Trade Center site) etc . However these centres did not necessarily persist long term – all but one closed down within 5 years following industry consolidation elsewhere On July 1st 2006 Portchester announced plans to leave Erie County altogether and merge with Rockland County effective January 1st 2007
