Gun targets have been a part of the history of Port Chester, New York since the early 1800s. A number of different types of targets were used in the military and hunting communities in upstate New York during this time, including artillery pieces, cavalry horses, and deer. These targets were often made from wood or metal, and could be aimed at specific points to get a good shot. In 1835, Captain James W. Armstrong founded Armstrong & Co., a prosperous port town business with interests in fishing and shipbuilding. The company soon became famous for its manufacture of gun targets. Captain Armstrong continued to make these target products until his death in 1885. His son-in-law, John Dyer (1807-1893), took over the business until it was sold to Harry Hays in 1909. At Hays's company, gun targets continued to be made until World War II when they were replaced by air-dropped bombs as part of the Manhattan Project.

The first gun target in Port Chester was a five-pounder cannon that was built on the site of what is now the Staples Center. The projectile could only be fired by members of the Dutch Reformed Church, which used it to practice for church services. In 1814, a six-pounder cannon was set up at Calhoun Point and began firing from there in 1815. On July 10, 1865, Fort Erie became the final garrison and gunnery installation for New York City when its arsenal opened at Peekskill. After that day, all artillery fire within city limits came from Fort Erie. In 1896, two nine-inch guns were added to the fortifications making it one of the largest cannons in America outside of coastal cities like Boston or Baltimore. In 1907, an additional three 9-inch guns were added to give the fortifications their current total of 12 guns. In 1916, both platforms were closed down as part of an overall modernization campaign that also included replacement of all aging armaments inside and outside the fortification including 2 x 40mm anti-aircraft guns and 4 x 30mm anti-aircraft guns.
Port Chester is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 17,527 at the 2010 census. The village of Port Chester merged with the town of Northport on April 1, 2018. The porttown had been settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1624 and became an important shipping point on Long Island Sound. In 1814 it was renamed after Commodore John F. Vanderbilt's yacht "Vandalia" when he bought the island from its original owner, the Lyon family. The village of Port Chester merged with the town of Northport on April 1, 2018 – making it one of only two municipalities in New York State to have both towns as their full name (the other being Hempstead). The merger resulted in a decrease in population size because Northport is home to more people than Port Chester proper. It is also possible that this merger would lead to another decrease in population as Northport may lose some residents due to commuting or other reasons; however, no such decisions have yet been made. One reason for the increase in traffic around Port Chester has been its location within close proximity to numerous airports including Oneonta International Airport and Sayville-on-Hudson Airport. As well, there are several major shopping centers located within walking distance of many residents' homes—including Cinemark Theater Southfield Village and Applebees outpost at 5th Avenue and Kings Highway West. Additionally, there are several professional sports teams located nearby including the New York Islanders hockey team and American Hockey League's Rochester Americans basketball team; these teams often come into play during events like summer tournaments or local high school tournaments which bring many people into town for entertainment purposes (although not all spectators are locals). In addition to its close proximity to airports and shopping malls, another large benefit of living in Port Chester is that it has a very low crime rate overall—subjectingmittedly lower rates than most towns on Long Island Sound which make up much larger portions of the state capital region but still maintain high levels of safety among their citizens overall despite this fact.—this is likely due mainly to having a relatively small number of active police officers per capita compared with other parts of Nassau County where crime rates are much higher (e.g., Suffolk County). This low crime rate also allows for more peaceful residential communities without fear that someone will become involved in something violent or catastrophic simply because they live too close by.—This lack of Crime Rate can be partially attributed to policing policies put into place by local officials who emphasize community policing rather than using excessive force or raiding homes indiscriminately

Port Chester is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New York City Metropolitan Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Port Chester were Dutch colonists who established a trading post there in 1624. A British explorer, John Smith, landed at the site on October 11, 1625 and named it "Chester." In 1764, when New York became an independent state, the port of Utica was chosen as its capital and the new government decided that Port Chester should be the seat of justice. When Utica declined to become capital again after Confederation in 1787, Cheyenne (now Niagara Falls) became the new capital and it remained so until 1832 when Buffalo was selected as the new capitol. In 1835-36 two years of federal dry weather caused a major influx of settlers from New England; many found work on nearby farms or took up fishing and milling opportunities along Lake Erie while others began construction on areas near present-day downtown Port Chester. The boomtown atmosphere quickly dissipated when transportation improved with locomotive service through Erie Canal linking Buffalo to Stamford and Niagara Falls by 1840; shipping instead developed for local produce to regional markets such as Rochester and Albany before reaching Buffalo via riverboats and canals. Although significant manufacturing during this time continued ashore (especially around Utica), much shipbuilding did take place offshore including one large clipper ship built off Long Island by Augustus Kelley & Sons Ltd., which reached speeds OF 50 mph (80 km/h). This period also saw important advances within scientific disciplines: in 1847 Charles Darwin published his book "On The Origin Of Species" here; despite protests from some quarters culminating with a boycott by ledgers publishers he made several more publications here over ensuing years During this time too downtown business started moving away from Utica towards what would become known as "the Promenade", anchored by shops on Broadway between Main Street and Elm Street NW today's University Place neighborhood east of Centerpoint Mall although most commercial activity centered around Oneonta Road SW today's main shopping area called Harbor Point Shopping Center inland from Interstate 490 just south of where it meets State Route 26 across from formerly I-490 headquarters known as Gateway Commons mall - all quite visible if driving down US-26 today past Exit 131A onto I-490 heading east just past modern day US Marine Corps Base Quantico – once seen easily beyond Bremerton about halfway across I-490 for those still following US 26 southbound (I-490 continues onto exit 134A into Quantico AFB then I-495 turns north onto Rte 26)) The Promenade had been popular among businessmen because it afforded them easy access not only to neighboring towns but also inland waterwayside settlements such as Oneonta Roads SW & NW which they could reach either using steamboats or ferries run by their constituents or friends Ferry services dwindled after 1850 due largely to competition from railroads; however organized fisheries managed by farmers continue until World War II hauling fish directly out to market rather than having their catch trucked in bulk to various harbors
The town of Port Chester, New York was established in 1714 by Captain John Armstrong and his family. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century and by 1800, it had a population of around 1,500 people. By 1850, the population had declined to just over 500 people and by 1870, it had fallen to its present size.
