Port Chester is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 12,574 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Port Chester was made on October 8, 1792 by Captain John Stevens and his men as part of their survey for the Kingsbridge Purchase. On December 3, 1792, the town was chartered as a village by Acting Governor Nicholas Biddle. The post office at Port Chester was established on October 8, 1803 and remain so to this day. On February 14, 1825, the village became a town when it joined with neighboring Buffalo to form the Niagara Frontier seat of Erie County. In 1870-71 there were 5 schools in Port Chester (three public and two private). With the opening of Interstate 80 in 1984-85 and increasing truck traffic through towns along its route; many small businesses closed or merged into larger ones over time; several smaller schools were closed outright while one large school became an online learning center known as “Port Chester Academy”; all but one of those have since been reopened either through consolidation or purchase by another school district within Erie County/New York State. The next major improvement to magazine sights came about in 1923 when Jens Meyer developed what he called a “Cannonical Eye” magazine sight design. The fort was used to control trade with the native nations in upstate New York and it is thought that the first European settlement in what is now Portchester County took place in this location in 1664. Wealthy Dutch merchants built their first home here in 1712 and by 1740, they had amassed an impressive fortune. In 1814, General George Armstrong Custer fought his way through Indian resistance at the Battle of Buffalo Gap and won a major victory against them here. The battle helped secure Ulysses S. Grant's military reputation as a general of distinction and also led to increased American support for the war effort against Mexico. The town developed rapidly after World War II as tens of thousands of soldiers poured intoPort Chester to serve in various roles during both wars. Many residents today continue to live here, either because they are natives or have ancestry from nearby towns like Rye or Oneonta.
