Port Chester, New York is a town in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Erie County after Buffalo. Port Chester is one of two Towns in Erie County and the only one located on the north shore of Lake Erie. The first settlers were Germans who arrived from Pomerania in 1795 and founded what would become Port Chester. They were followed by Irish immigrants who arrived around 1810 and started to work on the Great Lakes shipping routes. The first stores opened up here in 1820 when John Larkin built a store on Main Street called Larkin's Store. In 1828, George Kapp constructed a gristmill on Wall Road which became known as Kapp's Mill. By 1830, there were six businesses operating here: four stores, one mill, and three taverns/houses. In 1830-31, several hundred German Catholics came overland from Stettin via Buffalo to settle here in what would be their new homeland (now Buffalo). They founded the Catholic Church of America which still exists today as Sisters of Charity of Nazareth de la Salette Chapel No 2 (known locally as Our Lady Help of Christians). They also erected a small chapel called Holy Rosary Chapel on First Avenue near where Bankers Life Insurance Company now stands – it was dedicated on October 12th 1830 by Bishop John Sweeny with much fanfare including an address from Ulysses S Grant! One result of this influx was that English was increasingly becoming established as the predominant language spoken among these early settlers – something that would continue through most of North America during this time period! In 1836-37,orge Kapp erected another gristmill on Third Street which became known as Kapp's Mill No 1; he also bought land adjoining it for development into a town site – this area now includes parts of downtown Port Chester. In 1840-41 Indiana congressman Jacob Wertheimer visited Port Chester and noticed how well things had been going for the community since his visit just two years earlier; he recommended that Congress pass legislation giving citizens free transportation within their own towns or villages! This finally happened in 1845 when Free Railroad Act went into effect; thereafter, all goods transported within any township or village within Erie County could be charged an excise tax! A post office operated here from 1865 until 1919; then it changed its name to Port Chester Post Office Department - later renamed to USPS Service Delivery District - before finally being cancelled due to postal reform efforts announced by President Harry Truman in 1953! Today there are only occasional services offered here through our USPS Postal Annex - meaning that Residents have largely turned to email/phone communication for most local services! As you can see – despite having some very tough times recently (the recent Tornado Season being especially difficult), Portchester has continued to thrive throughout many cycles throughout history!!!

The first European settlement in what is now Portchester County, New York was a small cabin erected by Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor on the Necklace of Terry Island in 1624. The island was then part of the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In 1764, the British established Fort Niagara on the neck of land between modern day Stamford and Jericho to protect their trading interests in the area. In 1784, George Washington founded Mount Vernon as his presidential estate in southwestern Port Chester Township. He also built acres around it for use as a living quarters and gardens. The estate continued to be used as a presidential home until 1929. During World War II, many American soldiers were stationed at Camp Upton near present day White Plains, New York; however, most were transferred to Suffolk County when that county was created from portions of Westchester and Putnam counties on April 1, 1942. Most residents moved out during the war years but some have returned over time. Today's downtown area around Mount Vernon is populated mainly by students and professionals who work at nearby colleges or universities along with people who live there full-time or part-time. Many homes dating back to before 1800 are still standing within walking distance of downtown Philadelphia today thanks to recent renovation efforts by several Historic Preservation organizations including the Trust for Public Land which manages much of Upper Manhattan's landmark architecture including many Federal buildings such as Capitol Hill)
