The village of Haverhill is adjacent to Port Chester on the north shore of Long Island Sound. The first permanent settler in what is now Port Chester was Nicholas de Montresor in 1664. He named his new land "New Netherland" after his native Netherlands. In 1724, John Armstrong founded a small trading post at the mouth of the Delaware River called Armstrong's Landing which became known as Port Chester because it served as that port for goods arriving from Canada and points east. In 1768, George Washington sent American troops under Colonel Thomas Gage to quash an uprising against British rule in North America by General Arthur Stonington and his Indian allies led by Chief Majorasheta (alias Black Tom). After three days of fighting and many casualties on both sides, Washington ordered General Cornwallis to surrender without losing any men or horses and with no loss to himself or his forces. At this point, much of Loyalist America had followed Britain into war against her common foe; however, some patriot leaders such as John Adams envisioned a future American empire based upon its own wealth and power rather than dependence upon Great Britain. This vision would come full circle when their country achieved independence in 1815.)
