Port Chester is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 28,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Albany-New Rochelle Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers were Dutch and English people who arrived in 1624. The town was named for Nicholas de Port Chester, 2nd Viscount Castlereagh (1619–1675), a British statesman and diplomat who served as foreign secretary to Queen Anne from 1676 to 1683. The first post office in Port Chester was established on April 15, 1814. In 1825, the name of the town was changed to Westerville after William Westervelt, an American politician and Senator from New York. In 1869 the name of the town was again changed to Port Chester after its incorporation as a village; it remains so today. In 1899, an act of Congress created four new counties within Sullivan County: Onondaga, Cayuga, Niagara and Rochester counties were created out of parts of Ulster and Ontario counties respectively; while still remaining within Sullivan County the villages became townships (the last being Westport). The village of Westerville remained part of what is now Onondaga County until 1922 when it became part of Ontario County; however it reverted back to its original name in 1972 when Onondaga county merged with Erie county into newly formed New York State government. In 1926 two small villages located west side Of Town line between Onondaga Village and Northport Township split off from Westerville Township form their own independent municipality known as "East Bethel". This Municipality had no connection with either Westerville or East Norwich which would later become one subdivision within Essex county under Clinton administration during that time period but continued using "Westerville" name for all purposes including mail service until finally reverting back to "East Norwich" name in 1998 when they joined Essex county proper once again effective January 1st 1999.) A total of sixteen municipalities have been organized since then: twelve rural ("Olde Dutch") communities outside Albany city limits; three hamlets located on Hudson River south shore near Kingston Landing Ferry Terminal - all closed by 2002 due to economic decline - all reopened by 2006 following successful community development model ang supported by state & federal funds thru NYS Department of Environmental Conservation – creating over 100 jobs during2006/2007 renovation process; one incorporated community located north end on Seneca Lake - 2013 closing date due largely to lack d'community support & loss d'economic vitality resulting from prohibition fugitive activity; six additional unincorporated communities located around Dunkirk area east side Mohawk Valley Airport -2013 closings also due largelyto lack d'community support
In 1624, the Dutch founded a trading post on what is now the corner of First and Main streets in Port Chester, New York. The trading post was called "Onder de Witte Boom" meaning "Under the White Tree." It served as a stopping point for traders who traveled between New Netherland and Europe. The Dutch also constructed a ferry terminal at this location which facilitated trade connections between New Netherland and Long Island. In 1636, the English established their own trading post on the same site. The English named their post "New Haven" after Haven in Connecticut. In 1814, Ulysses S. Grant became president of the United States and ordered that all American forces be withdrawn from Spanish-occupied Puerto Rico. As a result of this order, many Native Americans moved to Port Chester to begin anew lives in what is now northeastern Queens County. During World War II, Port Chester was bombed by Japanese bombers during Operation Coronet on November 25th and December 2nd of 1942. The bombings destroyed most of the commercial center including several banks and businesses along with significant damage to churches and other buildings. However, most importantly, it caused great losses to property values within town limits which continue to affect local economy today
