Port Chester, New York is a town in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 25,874 at the 2010 census. The town was formed from part of Westchester County in 1853. It was named for George Washington Portes (1765-1837), an American lawyer and politician who served as a delegate to the U.S. Congress from New York City from 1807 to 1811 and as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1828 to 1830. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to honor Commodore John Halsey King III (1872-1927), Commandant of Coast Guard Station Portsmouth during World War I and first African American admiral in the United States Navy. In 1925, Port Chester became one of two communities located on Long Island within their respective county boundaries; both towns were consolidated into one municipality under that name in 1999. As part of this consolidation process, some commercial properties were transferred from Westchester County to Port Chester while others were reassigned to other villages or towns on Long Island due to falling populations or lack of available land within those communities limits. Amodia Farms State Park is located in downtown Port Chester and offers views over Cohoes Bay towards Sayville and Islip. After American independence was gained in 1776, Port Chester served as the capital of New York state before Albany became its seat. In 1814, it was renamed to honor George Washington'sRN Corps Headquarters during his first term as President of the United States. During World War II, Port Chester hosted shipyards that manufactured military vessels and other war materials for both Allied and Axis powers. After hostilities ended in 1945, many manufacturing operations were closed down or relocated to other parts of Erie County; however, some remain active today such as Hormel Foods Company and GM Place mall which opened in 1996 adjacent to another former manufacturing site from World War II – Wawa Pizza Hut.
