This led to the development of rifled barrels which allowed projectiles to travel at a greater distance and caused artillery pieces to fire more rounds per minute than before. This also helped increase battlefield casualties as cannons were no longer limited by range restrictions but could now slaughter entire mobs of enemies at once without having to worry about hitting anything close by. In 1853, John Aiken founded JAP Arms Company in Port Chester after moving from his home state of Rhode Island with his family. His company manufactured rifle ammunition until 1899 when he merged with Winchester Rifle Company Ltd., creating what is now known as Winchester Ammunition Incorporated (Winchester). The company produced shells for both artillery and handguns until 1971 when they merged with Remington Arms Corporation (Remington) to form what is currently known as Remington Outdoor Co., Incorporated (ROI). From that time until 1865, when steamboats replaced sailing ships as the main means of transportation through Erie Harbor, Port Chester served as an important shipping center for eastern Pennsylvania and western Montgomery County. during World War II many factories were built in Port Chester including two aircraft plants which produced B-29s for America's war effort; these plants closed after World War II but their remnants are still visible today around downtown Port Chester including some former company headquarters buildings such as Bethlehem Steel Corporation's iconic Framingham Building (#208), now used as office space by WITF Clear Channel Communications Tower (formerly known as One Liberty Plaza) The post-World War II period saw dramatic changes for Port Chester with many new businesses opening up such as Dairy Queen, Home Depot and Sears Roebuck & Co.. After years plagued by crime rates which had seen high levels ofovertyand joblessness among young people throughout most of the 1990s - see: 'Poverty Reduction Task Force' report - things began to change starting in earnest within just a few years when then Mayor Tom DuBois set about creating a community policing strategy which has seen lows unemployment rates across all age groups within 10 blocks or less from City Hall while also seeing significant increases in property values citywide During his tenure between 2003 and 2007 average weekly sales prices increased 5%, median household income increased 3% (to $92K), poverty decreased 8% while violent crime decreased 25%. These have been some very successful mayoral initiatives leading to revitalization that have seen much success even outside city hall where there has been continued recent efforts underway to improve public transportation options into town

However, the townsfolk did not give up on their dream of becoming a major port city. In 1854 they built a new harbor which allowed them to become one of America's leading shipping ports. Over time, Portchester has continued to enjoy significant economic success despite various challenges such as hurricanes and high levels of pollution. Today, it is home to a number of prestigious cultural institutions including The New Yorker Museum and Art Gallery, The Emerson College School for Theater Arts, and The Yale School of Drama.
In 1764, the town of Port Chester was established on the site of what is now the city of Syracuse. The town was named in honor of General George Clinton, who had helped to win the American Revolution. In 1812, the town was renamed Syracuse after Ulysses S. Grant, an officer in the Union army who had played a key role in suppressing secessionism and defeating McClellan's forces at Antietam.
