The town is named for Captain John Smith and his crew who explored the Erie Canal in 1664. The first permanent settler arrived in 1785 when Daniel Haggerty bought land from the Lenape people in what is now Port Chester. By 1825, the town had a population of only 100. In 1834, Henry DeWitt built the first gristmill on Canandaigua creek and by 1840, there were ten mills operating in Port Chester. In 1886, Samuel Morse established the first telephone line between Buffalo and Cleveland through Port Chester; this helped spur development of business around phone companies and within port towns like Buffalo and Rochester. The decline of manufacturing during the 1990s led to a loss of jobs for many residents but also an increase in commercial activity around highways such as Route 209 which runs through town center. However, with new investment coming into town from out-of-state developers over recent years its economy has begun to rebound again thanks to increased trade with neighboring communities as well as its location near major airports (New York City's LaGuardia Airport and Syracuse's Syracuse International Airport). This resurgence has been further cemented by plans by local officials to develop downtown into an attractive mixed use district that would include restaurants, bars/liquor stores/, high end retail space etc., while injecting much needed economic life back into an area that has seen some significant decline since it began experiencing rapid growth during post-industrial times decades ago

The town was founded by Jonas Stockett on a shoal of mud that lay between two rivers, the Genesee and Niagara. By 1802, it had a population of 1,000 people. In 1827-28, General William Hull built the USS Constitution at what is now the base of Oneonta Lake as part of his war effort against France. The ship's masts can still be seen rising above the water near Main Street. In 1835-36 an act was passedocating land for public schools which would later become known as Schembechler Academy and State High School (now Western New England University). In 1840-41 an act was passedocating land for a cotton gin which would later become known as Port Chester Cotton Gin Company and also serve as home to Bethlehem Steel Corporation (now Arkema) .settlement began in earnest In 1847-48 local farmers formed a society for grain storage called "The Grain Growers' Association" In 1850-51 three miles northwest of town on Cayuga Creek there was foundered an American brigantine calledthe SS America with 184 passengers including 30 Americans who went ashore to trade goods with local Indians...the remains have never been located but are believed to lie buried offshore somewhere off shore In 1858 when Buffalo opened its portage from Niagara River into Lake Erie it became necessary for ships to enter or leave through this new harbor ; so much shipping traffic took place here that provisioning warehouses were built along both banks of the creek ." - From "Port Chester History" by Gail Wiegand
Port Chester is a town in the Catskills region of New York, United States. The population was 23,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Liverpool, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Port Chester were Dutch and English settlers who founded a small trading post on an island near the present-day intersection of Main and Clinton streets in 1664. The post was abandoned after only three years when it was destroyed by Native Americans. In 1814, Ulysses S. Grant's father, James Grant, bought one hundred acres (40 hectares) of land that forms the central business district of Port Chester from Senator Thomas Fenton for $8 per acre. In 1821, Ulysses S. Grant built the first courthouse in what is now Port Chester for $2,500 (). The cornerstone of the current building was laid on December 3rd, 1824 by President James K. Polk (). A year later he also donated land to build a public school which opened on October 25th, 1827 (). In 1830–1831 John Witherspoon organized a group called "The Pioneers" which aimed to establish a permanent settlement in what are now Port Chester and White Plains Junction where they had discovered rich coal fields around Kingston Station (now Kingston). Witherspoon's group failed to find support among other colonists and disbanded after two months due to lack of funding (). In 1840 John Dolan established himself as a farmer in what are now Eastchester and Westchester counties with his farmstead located about two miles east ofpresent-dayPortChester on Rensselaer Creek. Dolan became one of the earliest white farmers in eastern Upstate New York when he purchased 1/4 mile (0 kilometer) northeast from original home site occupied by members of Oneida Nation () abutting present day Greenburgh Village () today’s Harrisonburg Township(). From this location Dolan developed his extensive commercial farming operations that have continued up until this day.. After forty years as a settler John Dolan sold his interestin his farm adjacent to modern day Our Lady OFthe Assumption School propertyto Joseph Pappalardo for $10 per acre on February 26th 1909.. On November 22nd 1911 Pappalardo conveyed title deedfor .5 square mile (.13 square kilometers) surrounding area including almost all present dayport chester north shoreline extending into Erie County including most populated areas westofsyracuse
