Plattsburgh, New York is a small town located in Upstate New York. The population was 5,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Plattsburgh-Newmarket-Brockton, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Plattsburgh was Nicholas Biddle in 1784. He and his family later moved to present day Plattsburgh when he became a captain in the United States Navy during the Revolutionary War. During the early 1800s,Much of what is now Plattsburgh was occupied by Native Americans who were fishing, hunting and trading with European settlers. One such Indian trader was John Graves Simcoe (1751-1813).Simcoe came to America from England as a young man and worked his way up through the British colonies until he became governor of Province of Canada in 1791. In 1802 he served as U.S. Secretary of State under President George Washington before becoming president of Canada in 1803 and serving until 1807 when he resigned due to health problems. Afterwards Simcoe returned to England where he died several years later at age 83 years old.. In 1814 Simon Bolivar founded Venezuela on an area that now includes eastern Cuba and northwestern Venezuela including what are today Plattsburgh and Harriman counties.. After Bolivar's death in 1830, Venezuelan rule over eastern Cuba ended with an inexperienced general named Antonio López de Santa Anna taking control instead . Santa Anna quickly lost favor with many Cuban leaders because he could not stop their subsistence farming while also paying them large subsidies which generated much resentment among the peasantry .. Santa Anna abandoned most efforts tomodernize Cuba while continuing to support indigenous Tupac Amaru warriors who had fought Spanish forces for independence against Spanish rule.. Consequently, throughout much of this time period there continued significant Indian presence within Cuba even though no formal treaty had been negotiated between Spain and America regarding this matter .. By 1840 only about 10%of Cubans living inland were descendants of Native Americans while more than 90%of those living on Havana Peninsula were Spaniards or Portuguese...In 1841 American troops invaded Hispaniola (the southernmost island of Hispaniola) after France made claims thereto pursuant to its treaty with Spain following its victory over Spanish forces at Trafalgar naval battle.. French troops landed on Hispaniola on July 12th but withdrew after learning that American forces were nearby...A detachment from General Thomas Wayne's 1st brigade crossed into Haiti on September 25th and began operating from there against French forcesadinstructed by Commodore John Rodgers…American operations along both coasts intensified due largely to Rogers' efforts which saw him command two battalions totaling almost 2,500 men for three months beginning October 8th...Aftermath: On November 7th General Thomas Wayne arrived at Port au Prince with 4 brigades having advanced 9 miles into Haiti; however reports indicated that 500 Ulysses S Grant's 7 regiments plus 3 militia companies numbering 10 officers under Colonel Augustus Stiles had also landed earlier that day at Belize City...On December 6th General Wayne ordered his remaining brigade headquarters back across river estuary depositing all artillery except one company behind fortifications; moreover orderlies reported that numerous stores belonging to Colón had been looted by French troops prior their departure On December 13th Commodore Rodgers sailed for Guantanamo Bay carrying news that Haitian rebels led by Jean René Desmarais had surrendered without fighting−a major disaster for Admiral Rogers who quickly decided upon military action against Desmarais rather than negotiate peace terms....On January 16th Commodore Rodgers burned all but 350 houses east bank of river St Francois leaving less than one acre above water level unguarded.....Action followed: Commodore Rodgers ordered Rear Admiral David Johnston Commander North Atlantic Fleet flagship USS Constitution launched Resolution Squadrons Yacht Squadron 5 commanding HMS Guerriere Squadron 2 Birds Squadron commanded HMS Foudroyale First Lieutenant Charles A Smith aboard HMS WarriorFirst Lieutenant James H Moulder afloat Fortress gunboat USS Constitution attacked Grenadier Island situated just south shore opposite Saint Pierre River mouth then boarded it fired fifty rounds striking everything inside including magazine house hospital landau barracks cookhouse plantation coffee mill garrison guard post batteries....It should be noted here that damages sustained included loss of dozens if not hundreds if not thousands homes destroyed barns mules etc.......Haitian rebels never fully surrendered so total number killed may have exceeded 1000.........Later action resulted in Treaty Of Paris ending war between France & America......Withdrawal allowed English legal system & slave trade begun.....By 1800 approximately 80%of native americans reside within states bordering US.....Today some 50%ofnativeamerican population lives within states bordering US& Mexico..........Plattsburgh has experienced various waves OF settlement since its founding as part of New York Colony/State in 1624........In 1860 plattselorged 3rd largest town north upstate new york state...............................................................During prohibition era plattstown prospered as bootlegger center.......................................................From 1920 till 1939 plattstown served as seat for county court..................................................Until 1951 plattstown remained blacklisted site during McCarthy witch hunt.................................................................................................Today still contains vestiges OF Prohibition Era activity
