Plattsburgh, New York is a small town in upstate New York. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Plattsburgh-Aldenburgh-Tioga County, New York school district. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Plattsburgh were Dutch traders and fur traders who set up a trading post there in 1624. By 1714, the British had established their own trading post here and the name changed to Pittsburg after King George II of Great Britain. In 1801, United States troops under General James K. Polk attacked Fort Erie on Lake Ontario while supplies were being unloaded from ships here for American forces fighting Napoleon's army in France. The battle resulted in heavy losses for the Americans and as a result, development of this small town around the fort stopped until after war ended when many residents moved away to find new opportunities during Reconstruction. Today, Plattsburgh has a variety of businesses including two banks (One Capital One and HSBC), an insurance company (First Niagara Financial Group), three supermarkets (Albertsons, Sprouts Farmers Market, Giant Eagle) as well as a few restaurants and bars along with several schools including one high school which offers agriculture programs such as crop rotation and soil science classes. KFC also operates a subsidiary called Kentucky Fried Chicken here; it opened its first restaurant in 1984 within walking distance of where today's Walmart stands currently located on Main Street.

The town was founded in 1786 by Loyalists from Rhode Island as an outpost on the then-new border between what are now Vermont and New York State. In 1814, Plattsburgh became a port of entry for goods arriving from Canada and its colonies. The city of Plattsburgh developed around the port until it closed in 1997 due to heavy pollution from trucks driving downriver to load goods at nearby Peconic Bay Naval Base. In 2003, Mayor John de Blasio announced that he would establish a park in honor of United States General George Washington during his visit to Plattsburgh that summer. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew destroyed many homes and businesses in downtown Plattsburgh; however, Mayor Cuomo announced that he will rebuild most of the destroyed structures within 6 months and that some new housing will be built as part of $25 million investment for storm recovery efforts in Upstate New York over 5 years The history of Plattsburgh goes back to 1786 when Loyalist colonists arrived on the newly created border between what are now Vermont and New York State after their province was divided between England and America during the American Revolution. They established themselves along what is now Market Street just south of present day City Hall Square before moving inland towards what is today Main Street where they continued their trading post until 1814 when they moved out into open country beyond present day Alden Hill Road which formed part of British America at this time (present day Burlington County). Over time developments occurred such as: From 1814 until 1897 when it closed due to heavy pollution caused by Canadian truck traffic coming downriver for loading at Peconic Bay Naval Base - there were three towns located within sight or sound of what is now downtown Plattburgh - Kingston (now North Kingston), Newport (now South Newport), and Pittsford (now East Pittsford). These Towns all prospered commercially due to shipping/trade activities taking place upstream while also enjoying tax breaks enjoyed by those living closer to Lake Ontario than anywhere else on Long Island at this time. As a result however Port facilities began becoming outdated with inadequate storage space combined with increasing demand from industry which led eventually to closure in 1997 although some residual functions still took place such as: 1) The incorporation/establishment of Alden Hill Road Park - one half mile east Of Downtown Plaza which currently houses two tennis courts 2) A current Art Gallery displaying local artists 3) A few stores remaining open including KFC / Papa Johns franchises 4) A few dozen source rentals for various purposes
plattsburgh was first settled in 1778 by Loyalists who sided with the British during the American Revolution. The town name is derived from the Mohawk word "paltz" meaning "a tract of land." Pultney's Purchase, a land grant to William Phelps and Sons in 1819, helped contribute to Plattsburgh's growth. The town became an important commercial center after its location on the Hudson River allowed for easy transportation of goods across the state. A canal was built through Plattsburgh in 1827 and it soon became a major shipping point for agricultural products and timber. During World War II, Plattsburgh played an important role as a munitions plant.
