Plattsburgh is a town in upstate New York, United States. It is the seat of Clinton County. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Plattsburgh were French colonists who arrived in 1614 and named it after Pierre Bayard, Sieur de la Salle's second-in-command on his ill-fated Voyage aux Américains (1609–10). The town was chartered on December 12, 1785 by the Province of Canada as "Rochester" because of its location within that province. The town grew slowly until 1825 when it became a flour milling center for the surrounding area thanks to its rich soils and good water supply. In 1849, local farmers formed the Nashua Mill Company to improve production for local mills but this failed when demand for flour increased elsewhere in New York State. In 1865, Anthony Trollope founded a small newspaper company near Rochester called "The Republican". This paper served as an early advocate for civic improvement and political reform in Upstate New York while also opposing state policies favorable to large landowners over small farmers. In 1886, Plattsburgh became home to America’s first public school when building began on what would become Macmillan Hall; later renamed Hunter College School of Social Work after philanthropist Andrew Hunter donated $5 million towards initial construction costs In 1908 Independence Day was celebrated with a parade through downtown streets lined with businesses displaying American flags

In 1814, the United States acquired Plattsburgh from Great Britain. The town was named for Lieutenant-Governor Nicholas Platt (1763-1835) and his wife, LadySusan Livingston. The first white settler was John Ferguson, who built a log cabin in 1798. The town's first courthouse was erected in 1800. In 1821, President James K. Polk ordered the construction of a new courthouse and jail to replace the old structure. The platted area around present-day Plattsburgh included much of what is today Orange County. The Town of Plattsburgh was incorporated on February 14, 1824. It borders Onondaga County to the south and east, Clinton County to the north, and Saratoga County to the west. On July 7, 1860, during America's Civil War, Union General Andrew Johnson ordered Colonel George Armstrong Custer to attack Confederate General Robert Ewing at Fort Erie without orders; this event is commonly called "Custer's Last Stand." After a two day engagement that resulted in many casualties on both sides including 5 Ulysses S Grant Medals Plus 4 Ulysses S Grant Texas Rangers Cross Keys with Oak Leaf Cluster each., Custer surrendered at Little Big Horn Creek on October 26th 1876 after being surrounded by about 20 Confederate cavalrymen with artillery support; this event is also commonly called "Custer's Massacre."
