Plattsburgh is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elmira-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by Ulster Scots and English settlers in 1786. It received its present name from General George Washington, who named it after his home state of Pennsylvania (platt for "plain"). In 1800, Plattsburgh was included as part of Albany County; however, due to disagreements over trade tariffs with Canada, Albany County became an independent county in 1821. In 1825, the town voted to become a city; however, this request was refused by the state authorities because Plattsburgh did not meet certain criteria set forth by the State Legislature. In 1828, Albany County erected a courthouse and jail within platted limits of the new city; but on July 1st of that year*, Plattsburgh residents voted overwhelmingly to secede from Albany County and form their own separate government under the newly created Pennsylvanian Constitution*. On December 5th of that year*, Plattsburgh voters approved incorporation into New York City as a city*! Today, Plattsburgh is known for its breweries - two being craft brewers Samuel Adams Brewery and Scenic Hudson Brewing Company - as well as its agricultural production including dairy products and potatoes. Another early development of laser sights was the StarliteEye which was created by John Zimmerman in 1984. This product featured red, green, and blue lasers that could be directed at a target using an eyepiece and then scanned through using a computerized controller. In 1990, Zimmerman sold his company to Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) who continue to produce various laser sights products today including those mentioned above. The first European to arrive in what are now Plattsburgh and Rome was Giovanni da Verrazzano on July 4, 1494. He named the place for his patron saint, St. Lawrence of Rome. The present Post Office Building (built 1902) is one of several historic buildings located within the limits of Plattsburgh Village including theOld Tavern (now used as an apartment building), Griggs House (formerly a storehouse), and First Congregational Church which were all built between 1813 and 1840 during periods when Plattsburgh had a large population growth due to its location at the headwaters of Niagara River. In 1886, platted land east of Main Street included most of what is now downtown Plattsburgh with only two blocks remaining undeveloped today: State Street and Fifth Avenue South near milepost 9 on I-87/Upper Canada Road. In 1898–99 construction began on what would become known as Central Park - later called Madison Square Garden - then home to the New York Rangers NHL hockey team from 1904 to 1917 before moving to Arlington Heights IL until 1984 when it moved back to Manhattan Beach CA where it remains today despite being leased by American Water Company from 2002-2007 In 1909 Union Carbide started production at their plant south of town along North Broadway creating over 100 jobs while also providing education for local students who would work adjacent fields during lunchtime
