Swivels were first patented in 1842 by Isaac Gibbs, a gunsmith and inventor from Plattsburgh. The patent application claimed that a "gun swivel" was an improved way to turn the barrels of firearms. The community's early years were difficult as there were no water supplies or mills available to locals until well into the 19th century. By 1836 however, a hotel had been built and platted by Revs Elisha Cook and Amos Kendall with plans for an agricultural village called Hope Hill; however this plan never came to fruition because lack of money kept it from being built. But around 1850 things began to improve as people started investing in farming products such as corn and potatoes which became very profitable due to increased demand from New York City during its rapid growth period following America’s founding as a country in 1776. However by 1860 there were still only about seventy residents living in HopeHill while more than two thousand people lived within five miles of downtown Plattsburgh proper according to one 1905 estimate! A major factor behind this growth was railroad development which led to new jobs for local farmers while also providing access to markets outside of town for goods transported eastward by railroads like those operated by Erie Canal companies like Penn Central Railroad Company (later Conrail) and Hudson Bay Railway Company (HBC). This era also saw some impressive civic improvements including building a public school which opened its doors in 1855 followed shortly thereafter by two churches: First Presbyterian Church (1856), then United Presbyterian Church (1863). And finally electric lighting arrived in 1870 followed soon thereafter by streetlights! With all these changes taking place within limits set by developers – many who happened to be citizens themselves – Pioneers such as Augustus Kelley played an instrumental role both initiating change along with others who helped oversee its implementation making their hometown oneofthemost progressing places on Long Island during that time frame!
