In 1836, Plattsburgh was founded by Nicholas Lewis and his brother Samuel. The town is named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, which took place in upstate New York. The battle was fought between American and British forces, and the Americans emerged victorious. In commemoration of the victory, the town erected a monument to commemorate the event. The monument stands today at North Avenue and Washington Street in downtown Plattsburgh. From its inception until around 1865, when it was discontinued due to budget cuts, the Albany Rifle Club (ARC) operated an armory located in what is now Park Avenue South on the east side of town. Arc members were responsible for maintaining firearms stored there as well as providing instruction on how to operate them. From 1853-1865, rifles stored at ARC were also used in various skirmishes along the border with Canada that led to several treaties being signed between both countries. During this time period, many gun sights were designed or invented in Plattsburgh; some of these include: - The first breech loading rifle sight known to have been installed on a firearm – an iron Cooke & Lillie sight dating back to about 1837 - A three-inch “bull” front sight featuring a graduated height adjustment system that allowed shooters to compensate for target size while range training; this sight was made available commercially starting about 1850

On July 9, 1830, platted boundaries were set for what would become Plattsburgh Township with an estimated population of 581 inhabitants including six stores and two schools; all but one date back to prior to its founding! On December 12th 1870 residents voted 3-1 in favor of annexing part of Ontario County into their new township; this action lead to the establishment on January 1st 1871 of Village of Plattsburgh with an estimated population over 1,000 people! Plymouth Post Office opened on September 10th 1898 under mail order from Rochester NY also serving as mycorrhizal agent until 1913 when it closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger unincorporated communities within Yatesville Township service area!
