Plattsburgh, New York is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Plattsburgh were French Huguenots who established a small village on the east side of the Gananda stream in 1764. In 1815, platted land was sold in what is now downtown Plattsburgh and parts of present day Utica by James Fenton as part of his purchase of an estate stretching from Buffalo to Rome. The town was named for General George Washington and his wife Martha Washington's birthplace on the eastern bank of the Gananda stream. In 1826, John Prentice built a mill on the west side of Gananda Stream and started production which helped support Plattsburgh until about 1860 when steamboats began carrying goods across Lake Erie to Rochester and other markets. After that time Plattsburgh relied mostly on fishing industry which continues to this day. In 1912, local citizens approved incorporation as a city; however it did not take hold due to lack of support from county officials. In 1916–17 efforts were made again to incorporate as a city but failed because there were no white residents living within city limits at that time. In 1957–58 Mayor Arthur Everson successfully lobbied for incorporation into Utica-Rome as an official borough with voting privileges like those granted by Utica proper but without municipal services such as police or fire protection (Utica had these services). On November 3rd 1958 Plattsburgh became an official borough with full powers including taxation and legislative representation under Borough President Harry Wohlgemuth Jr.. Today there are over 2,000 residents in downtown Plattsburgh along with over 100 businesses including many popular tourist attractions like USS Constitution Museum and USS Fulton Museum both open Monday through Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm; Saturday 9:00am – 4:00pm; Sunday closed due to Christmas)

Some residents did not choose to leave their homes because they were afraid that they would be drafted into the war if they stayed within the city limits. After the war ended in 1865, many Plattsburgh residents decided to move away from New York City because of political changes brought about by Reconstruction. Many began moving westward towards Chicago while others moved eastward towards Pennsylvania. However, some original Plattsburghians continued to live in the town until it ceased being a municipality in 1898 when it merged with other towns within Albany County to form Kings County (now Niagara County). Today, much of what once constituted Plattsburgh is now part of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Norfolktown boroughs within Lackawanna County; while a small portion remains within Plattsburgh itself as housing developments called The Rocks (originally built around 1800) and Northfields (built between 1910-1920). Although most residents have since left for various reasons - such as job relocation or suburbanization - some traces of early history remain throughout present day: For example, several streets named after Revolutionary War Generals are still active today; while plaques marking former courthouse site remain on Independence Avenue near downtown; and part of what is now Clinton Park Cemetery has been home to local families since 1796 whenPlattenburg's first settler arrived from Connecticut

Plattsburgh was founded in 1784 by Captain John Platt as a trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan. It became an important military base during the Revolutionary War and later served as the capital of New York State. In 1814, Plattsburgh was renamed to its current name, after General George Washington's birth place in Virginia.
