In 1851, the first gun magazine in Plattsburgh was established. It was a small store on Main Street, and it published "The Rifleman" monthly. The magazine's editor-in-chief was James W. Smith. At that time, there were only six rifle clubs in Plattsburgh. The club members would go to the store to buy ammunition and shoot at targets set up in the back yard. In 1869, the first rifle range was opened in town by C A Hargrave. After a few years, it became evident that the range couldn't accommodate all of the club members' requests for shooting privileges. So, in 1871, therange closed its doors for good and replaced it with a schoolhouse which served as an indoor shooting range from then on until 1978 when it reopened as an outdoor range with target practice available year-round! Today's oldest gun society still exists within Plattsburgh – The Riflemen of America – founded in 1865!

Plattsburgh, New York is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ulster County. The town was established in 1785 and named for James Platt, an early settler. The towns of Plattsburgh and Vestal developed along the Hudson River as fur trading posts in what is now northern New York. In 1814, when Albany became the capital of the United States, Plattsburgh became its first capital city. The city annexed part of Vestal in 1825 and annexedstill more territory until it was reduced to its present size by annexing the towns of White Sands and Tonawanda in 1886. The original village site that later stood on downtown Plattsburgh was platted by John Dickinson in 1785 as part of a grant from General George Washington to Major Thomas Paine during his tour through western New York after his victory over British forces at Saratoga (the Battle of Bunker Hill). The name "Plattsburgh" was applied to this village by Captain Jameson who surveyed and laid out the town on April 14, 1786 while stationed at Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario. As late as 1818 one inhabitant listed their address as "One Hundred And Seventy-Four feet East Of Market Street". Downtown Plattsburgh changed hands several times before finally resting within our current borders with vestal following annexation in 1886. Downtown business centers include Pioneer Memorial Hall which contains a restored 16th century square tower dating back to 1684; State Street between Broadway Avenue and State Street; Lafayette Square between Pearl and Lafayette streets NW; Union Station across Erie Boulevard from Main Street (now called US 11/15); 10 Downing street SW corner First Avenue SW; Stairswell Tavern on Ferry Road near Johnson's Chapel (now known as West Side Presbyterian Church). In 1824 local resident Elijah Howe leased land east of Main Street from Revolutionary War veteran Job Trimble for use as a military reservation where he built Fort Howe which served as headquarters for American troops during the Revolutionary War. The fortifications were destroyed after only two months during the war but are still visible today just off highway exit ramp off exit 7A southbound Interstate 90 near I-787 North about 12 miles north-northwest of Utica NY In 1865 Colonel Augustus Biddle annexed portions including what is now downtown Plattsburgh taking into account that much older buildings had been razed or moved since then according to Town Ordinance No 2190 ApriL 1865 Thereafter all former parts or parts thereof adjoin'd thereto form one entire community viz: Downtown PLATTSBURG Annex'd To VESTAL By COLONEL AUGUSTUS BIDDLE Page 427 Original Laws Of N Y statehood being passed etcetera

The name also comes from an incident that took place on October 12, 1814 when Andrew Johnson delivered his State of New York Address from an elevated platform located within the present day plaza known as Lafayette Square. A crowd had gathered to listen to President Johnson and some began to boo and heckle as he walked across Broad Street towards Capitol Hill before walking back into Auburn Hall where he made his address without incident. After this event some citizens decided to change the name of their settlement (known then as "Newburgh") to honor General John Cushing's victory over British forces at Battle Of Saratoga which occurred near modern-day Albany on September 17, 1862 - an event which helped solidify American control over much of North America during this time period! During World War II many residents worked on munitions plants in nearby Schenectady or Buffalo while others were drafted into military service; most residents chose not to return home during wartime because they experienced rationing or other shortages common in those times. In 1958, with increasing suburbanization around Albany and Rochester following World War II, parts of Plattsburgh started becoming annexed by those cities although maintaining its own local government based out of its school board headquarters which still sits on Main Street today). In 1970 a new courthouse and jail were built on Broadway Avenue adjacent to Central Park while a shopping mall called Plaza opened location just south east off Route 9 overlooking downtown; this development brought more jobs and tax revenue directly into downtown communities like Plattsburgh while also impacting PLATTSBURG'S overall economy negatively due to increased traffic congestion through downtown streets
