The original Plattsburgh village was laid out on land Acquired by the Dutch East India Company in 1624 and named "Haarlem". The first settler in what is now Plattsburgh was Peter Schuyler, who arrived there with his wife in 1627. He built a cabin on an island near what is now Main Street and built a small trading post there which he called "Haarlem" (later "Plattsburgh"). A few years later he erected a larger log cabin on the site of present-day Plattsburgh Village. In 1635, resident John Watts founded the first school in what is today Plattsburgh Village. In 1784, George Washington visited Plattsburgh and noticed that it had not changed much since he had last seen it as president 25 years earlier. He recommended that Congress build a military fort here to protect against French attack from Canada. By 1800, Fort Niagara had been completed and platted for sale to General James Wilkinson as part of the purchase of Fort Erie for $5 million by President Thomas Jefferson. However, because no one wanted to live within easy distance of artillery batteries at Fort Niagara, only 2 families lived there by 1801 when it was sold to Colonel Augustus Wolcott for $2 million (). Wolcott made little use of it until 1814 when under orders from Secretary Hamilton Beecher he moved all American Indian troops away from New York City so that they could be used instead against Native Americans living east of Lake Ontario during the War of 1812 (). As part of this move most Indians left behind their villages along with many implements and artifacts including some replica cannons still found around town today! A plaque dedicated to them can be found at Lafayette Square across from State House In 1825 Roger Sherman bought 6 acres (20 hectares) adjacent toFort Niagara for $4 per acre (). He began construction on what would become Oneida Hall which would house his home and office until his death in 1888; today's CustomHouse Museum stands nearby . He also started building a road connecting Oneida Hall with other parts of his estate but never finished it due to financial problems . Today you can see evidence of this road - portions are still visible as interpretive trails leading up into Oneida Hall from various parts around town . From about 1830 through 1840 two brothers - Ebenezer (Ebenezer) Smith Sr., settled down near where Elmira High School stands today northeast corner lot between Third Avenue North & Fourth Street South just past front door on Hwy 4 W: They operated an inn/grill/ hotel called “The Eagle’s Nest” throghout most Of This Period wth direct connections To several miles long ferry service reaching Buffalo AndNiagara Falls

In 1886, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt called upon Mayor Elias Howe to build him a new home at what is now known as Commodore Vanderbilt Park in what was then known as Vance's Landing on the shore of Hudson Bay. At that time Vance's Landing consisted of five small houses surrounding a small millrace which served as their harbor and wharfage facility for shipping goods brought in by canoes from nearby villages such as Westville and Cobleskill
