The town was chartered on July 4, 1784 by order of President George Washington as Fort Clinton on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The fort was renamed Plattsburgh in honor of General James Wilkinson in 1802 and then again in 1814 after Commodore John Brown's landing there during the War of 1812. The first settler to arrive in what is now Plattsburgh was Jonas Stapleton who arrived with his family on October 24, 1692 from Kingston upon Hull, England via Saybrook River. He named his place "New Amsterdam" after Admiral Cornelius Vanderbilt's Amerigo Vespucci colony that had been established near Venice but failed due to lack of support from New Netherland colonists led by Governor Hendrick Hudson (1624-1685) and Vice President Nicholas Amboyne (1628-1711). The Stapletons were among earliest white settlers in what is now Plattsburgh Township which was formed December 12th., 1786 from parts of Putnam and Saratoga counties following the British victory at Saratoga Creek during the American Revolutionary War. In 1794 Colonel James Kieft purchased land east of present day Route 7 between Albany and Syracuse for $2 per acre from Simon Massena (1737-1810), one half owner of Fort Niagara whose property lay south across Seneca Lake towards modern day Rochester. Kieft donated this land to form nucleus for what would become Plattsburgh Township where he also built a Log House now known as Old Fort Clinton Inn which served as community center until its destruction by fire in 1903 Kieft's farmstead still stands today just north west off current Route 7 about two miles west of downtown Plattsburgh along US 14/23 northwest of village limits

Plattsburgh is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 5,683 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was settled by Dutch settlers in 1795. In 1803 it became part of the United States and was renamed Plattsburgh after American General George Washington's headquarters at Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain. The first school in Plattsburgh was built on what is now Main Street in 1802 by Rev. John Cranch and taught grades one through twelve. A public school system was established in 1834 with Instructional buildings located on Church Street east of Broadway and an Academy building located west of Broadway. In 1865 a trunk line railway called the Erie Railroad reached Plattsburgh from Buffalo and opened up trade with the surrounding villages including Canandaigua (now Niagara Falls). This helped to revive local economic activity which had been dormant for many years before that time due to lack of transportation available to reach them outside of Buffalo or Rochester. In 1866, land were acquired by Andrew Ahern from Isaac Van Kirk for $1,000 to begin construction on what would become the present day platted area around downtown Plattsburgh known as North Central Avenue which included parts of what are today Springdale Drive and Park Avenue north of Main Street; this area would later be known as "The Quarter". The first store opening within this area occurred on North Central Avenue between Springdale Drive and Park Avenue on December 31st, 1866 when "Avery & Wessels" conducted its initial business inside a large barn owned by Elias Avery along with his three sons Abel Wessels, Jacob Avery and Timothy Avery (the father died suddenly six months prior). On January 1st 1870 another store opens up within this same区 - this time operated by Jens Bockhaus - becoming one of only two grocery stores open within The Quarter during its early years until competition from larger stores began developing near downtown platted areas during the late 1800s During prohibition era (1912-1920), much black marketeering took place within The Quarter due to its rapidly growing illicit liquor trade which typically took place outdoors under cover of darkness where law enforcement could not be found or responded quickly enough given the high volume/scale involved; thus making it an ideal locale for criminal elements seeking to capitalize upon bootlegging operations It should also be noted that throughout most portion Of Prohibition Era there remained relatively small number Of alcoholics who chose To reside In Downtown& inner WorldPLeasantville ect ect because They felt Safe doing so although LifeS Threatened By widespread Epidemic Of Alcohol Abuse
