On July 16th 1865 Union general Ulysses S. Grant landed at Fort Erie on Lake Ontario with his military reserve unit (the 5th Infantry) and entered into battle against Confederate General Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia near Montero Bridge over the Elizabeth River nearpresent-day Troy Township outside of Plattsburgh proper; this event is generally considered as one of history's turning points in American warfare leading up to World War II because it demonstrated how well-armed Union forces could effectively repulse numerically superior Confederate armies while also sparing large portions of rural America from combat. Plattsburgh is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sullivan County. The town was named for Benjamin Platt, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the state senate from 1784 to 1789. The first settler in what is now Plattsburgh was John Meek who arrived in 1686. He built a cabin on an island near the present day junction of U.S. Route 1 and State Highway 20A (now CR 6). A year later, Meek's brother-in-law Nathaniel Greene moved from Rhode Island with his family to provide them with land east of Plattsburgh on which they erected a small log cabin and began to cultivate potatoes and other crops. In 1690, David Ducharme moved into the area and established himself as a trader with the Native Americans living along the Great Lakes region. By 1700, he had built two stores and three gristmills in what is now Plattsburgh; one still stands today on US1 south of US20A/CR 6 (). Ducharme also started up a trade with Quebec City which became important due to its natural resources such as fisheries and lumber. In 1702, George Washington set out from Albany via Montreal aboard HMS " Endurance" for his first visit back East as commander-in-chief after being decorated for leading British forces during King George II's War (1701–14). Washington stopped at Kingston upon Hull on his way east before arriving at Detroit on September 25th where he joined General Amherst's army under General Burgoyne against Admiral Howe at Saratoga Creek on October 9th,. When news reached Washington that Burgoyne had retreated across Lake Erie without achieving strategic objectives within New York City limits – including capturing New England ports like Boston – he ordered Howe to pursue him instead overland through snowbound Canada until Burgoyne reached Morristown north of Albany by November 15th (). Upon reaching Morristown, Howe found that Washington had already departednorthward with Amherstrouping with General John Forbes' army northwest of Albany () thereby avoiding another battle at Saratoga Creek (). Aftermath: On November 22nd (), Burgoyne surrendered unconditionally at Saratoga Creek () becoming an American military hero . This event helped solidify America's control over much of eastern Ontario following Britain's defeat in North America during her Seven Years' War (1754–67) In 1812 Ulysses S Grant served as Major General James Kenedy’s aide de camp during his march from Buffalo Grove Heights down Pennsylvania Avenue into Philadelphia when Kenedy met Major Pierre Trudeau who mentioned that there were “5 or 6 thousand people” loyal to Canada who could be mobilized should war break out between the United States and Great Britain (); this meeting led Eventually to Confederation (1867) The village site around current day Plattsburgh was plotted by Surveyor Daniel Freeman in 1795 while platted by him along Cutchogue Road West just inside present day NY 24 miles west of Utica Junction point following surveys made by Lt Colonel Isaac Brockway Jr & Ensign Nicholas Goodyear while serving honorably in Captains Nicolas Biddle & Ebenezer Harmon’s Company 3rd Regiment Continental Line Infantry stationedadin Utica

In 1814, American General Andrew Jackson occupied Plattsburgh and declared it a military post for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. After Union forces took over Plattsburgh in 1865, it reverted to U.S. control and remained so until 1957 when it became part of Syracuse County, New York.
