Plattsburgh is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Plattsburgh-Athens-Binghamton, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by German immigrants in 1795 and was named after George Washington's birthplace of Georgetown, Maryland. The first Post Office opened in 1824. In 1868, the name was changed to Plattsburgh after Union General Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Winchester Heights over Confederate General Pemberton. After years of growth and development, the town became an incorporated municipality on December 1, 1912. On July 1, 1984 it merged with Athens to form the Athens-Plattsburgh Combined Statistical Area (CSA). In 1795 two brothers founded a farmstead in what is now Plattsburgh Township which they named "Nixontown". They occupied it until 1800 when they sold it to Nicholas Curtiss who renamed it "Hershey". By 1801 there were twenty five families living on the farmstead including six Germans and four Englishmen who had come over as refugees from Great Britain during the American Revolution. William Hershey died before he could provide enough seed for his expanding farmstead so another brother farming with his sons started out from scratch in 1804/5 . Farming continued until 1865 when all but one family left for unknown reasons leaving behind only three cows and 768 bushels of potatoes per acre yielding about $2 per bushel! This gave rise to local legend that if you found a cow or potato off the main road you were allowed to take them home! After days of skirmishing near what is now downtown Plattsburgh, General John Fenton ordered his brigade under Colonel Elijah Wood to drive Burr out of town on July 12th 1802 after a series of Battles for Ferry Landing Bridge over the Mohawk River which saw heavy casualties on both sides In 1804 US President James K. Polk offered Gen Joseph Hooker commandant’s role at Fort Erie in Ontario County but Hooker decline because he did not want any army east of Niagara Falls . A force under Brigadier General Augustus Van Schaick marched from Plattsburgh upriver to attack Fort Erie but they were met with resistance from militia forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Greenough reinforce’d by Col Alexander Hamilton . The battle resulted in a major victory for Van Schaick leaving Hooker stranded at Fort Erie with only 20 men left against 3Companies Of Infantry belonging To Major Timothy Pickering !! The capture by United States finally ended British presence in North America A new treaty signed at Saratoga Springs on October 19th 1813 ceded all present day Sullivan County including Plattsburgh to the United States thereby opening access to Iroquois land westward that had been heldback by Native Americans since before European settlement Population growth delayed until 1840 when steamboats became available making transportation possible across the river During World War I munitions production moved here from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; Generals John J Pershing and William T Sherman visited this area during their campaigns through Upstate New York US president Franklin D Roosevelt made his home here while serving as Governor of New York from 1941-1945 During World War II many high ranking GIs stationed here including MajGen Raymond Odierno Jr Commander Ninth Infantry Division; LtGen Maxwell Taylor Third Army Corps Commander; Gen Walt Rostow Vice Admiral Robert E Thayer Commanding Headquarters Fifth Fleet Air Forces etc ..Among these personnel are: Chief Warrant Officer 2nd Class Harry Lensky First Sergeant Second Class Leo M Wexler Private First Class Julius Ascherman Signalman Third Class Lewis Kosinski Second Lieutenant Arthur Langer Staff Sergeant Lance Corporal Bernard Wiegand First Sergeant Harold Hlavacek Rifleman
